Dealing with salt creep dangers

I am fairly new to the aquarium hobby and want to make sure I am dealing with salt creep correctly.

The idea of it corroding a wire and having an electric problem is of paramount concern to me. How likely is that?

What things should I check and how often should equipment be cleaned?

At the moment I would say I clean pumps and such every six months...

Somewhat likely. With GFCI.

I don't worry too much, but if you notice salt creep on your wires, wipe it off. It doesn't need to be too often, but if it goes more than a month it becomes messier and you are right that salt is corrosive. Just keep some baby wipes for further down your wires, and a wet paper towel for right by your water. Make sure you do the same to nearby walls if the tank is close (even if it isn't visible). Salt peels paint too.

Every time I do a water change and turn off the pumps. I wipe everything down. If i think a power strip is getting too much moisture I'll take it offline and thoroughly clean and dry it.

As for GFCI, you can get inexpensive power strips with GFCI. These can save you life and your home. The picture i showed would have been much worse had the CFCI not tripped.

Never thought of the baby wipes, I'll borrow that idea, lutz123.

Eliminate / contain water splashing (or bubbles popping) and you have no "salt creep" to deal with in the first place.

I think this is the easiest way. Plus its cheaper than buying a whole extension GFCI.
