December nTOTM- calling for entries!

nano TOTM contest

nano TOTM contest

Hi all
My name is Victoria, My tank started when I sold my 140 gallon tank. I took a few of my favorite corals, and a few frags. . I had already had LPS and some soft corals and a few stonys. I thought it was quit easy and needed more of a challenge. So I started my nano cube SPS dominated tank. By growing up my corals from small frags, it gave me time to adjust and learn more about the interaction of alk, ca, mag, ph. I thought by watching it grow I could see the effects more. The equipment list when I first started goes as follows.

29 gal cube
30 lbs LS
25 lbs LR
I used egg crate wrapped with plastic screen to form a plenum under my sand bed.
Phosphate reactor
Canister filter W/carbon
150 watt MH 10K bulb + 2 PC 65watt actinic
I have a wave maker that powers two power heads
350-watt heater

I did make some changes to my system along the way:
I added a HOB fuge with Cheto and Miracle Mud
Removed the phosphate reactor (took up to much room in the tank)
Added phosphate remover to the canister filter with the carbon. And a bag of MM
Added a dosing pump to the system
Same lights
DIY skimmer

Mantaince:
I do 25% water changes 1x week (faithfully)
I dose ESV b-ionic Low ph formula (summer)
And the regular formula in the (winter) do to indoor Co2
I change the carbon and po4 remover 1xmonth, change the bag of MM 1x 6 months
I also change my PC every six months and the MH about every 8 OR 9 months

My focus is on husbandtry. I believe that you don't have to have the latest and most expensive equitment to enjoy this hobby.

I thought the same thing when I first saw this tank on another post! Toast! lol

Awesome tank Victoria, I love your set up AND your approach to reefing.

This one is gorgeous. (And besides, I am from California, lol!)

Here's my 30 gal. breeder. It's actually only 25 gal. of display. It's been up for almost a year, but corals were first introduced March '06. Just softies and LPS though. Either way I hope you enjoy.

Most of the reefers already entered their tank last month. I don't think there are enough pretty looking tanks around to do this Nomination every month. Do it once or twice a year is enough.

give me till mid December, you'll have a nice entry then :)

Hehhee I'm stocking up as well but maybe for New Years :)

Heres my 29, set up for a little over 2 or 3 years, i forget

lighting is 150w MH, 2x65 actinics, flow is MJ mod 400, soon to be tunze 6025, and a MJ 900, filtration is a big fuge with lots of cheato and a stocking with carbon in it

fish are 3 small chromis, 1 small cinnamon clown, 1 tiny hi fin red banded goby, i onyl count 4 fish, as the goby is too small to really count, as he grows the clown will be moved out

Victoria,

Thats about as good as it gets. You get my vote. The plenum is something different, mind giving us the details and an explaination on how it works.

I posted my tiny tank last month, but in support of the thread ...here it is again.

I like your tank too. I have always wanted a zoo tank. Its beautiful!!
Plenum is just some thing I'm trying, the idea is that the water under the plenum is without o2 much like a Deep sand bed. It is suppose to break down nitrate in to a gas and leave the tank. Anyway I have never had a nitrate reading on my test kit. So maybe it works? I think we all in this hobby need to keep trying things, thats how we learn.
Victoria

They highly suggest plenums on www.garf.org. They also explain it really well. Beautiful tanks to you both Victoria and Mark!! Mines pretty new; I figured I'd submit it for kicks. It's been a fun one to raise and simple. Talk about the lack of fancy equipment, I only use a heater, light, and pump, but then again, it's only softies and LPS.

Same here kaserpick...pump, heater, lights...thats it. No reactor, no chemicals, no carbon, NO DOSING, no skimmer, no sump, no testing, did I say NO DOSING...I just change 20% of the water every week. Going strong, no problems, no algae.

I am certainly no expert..thats a fact. But in small softy only nanos...PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE dont do anything but change the water...and often.

Mark

p.s. In a SPS tank...everything I said wont work :)

Reeferchickdc, I think considering the number of entrants, we won't have enough tanks to go around for 2 nTOTM competitions. IMHO, if the tank is cool enough, people will be inspired to vote for it regardless of its size.

I will post a new thread for the voting soon, so if anyone want to enter their tank, now is the time! :)

Oh man... Really awesome tanks guys!!! Gave me some inspiration on where to go with mine. Will be ready to enter in this comp in a few months time.. haha.. Only just restup my 28gal this week after a crash a while back :)
