Dedicated Seahorse Tank or Fish Tank???

Wow, Richard. That is a beautiful seahorse tank. Looks like a bowfront. How many gallons do you have? Are your red seahorses Reidis? I have never seen the Scissortail Gobies before, I definately will add them to my wish list.

What types of macroalgae do you have growing in your tank? I would rather use the algae as hitching posts than the gorg. corals.

It's a 92 corner bow. The red one is an erectus. The yellow ones on the right side of the first pic are reidi's and the slender one on the second pic is a barbouri. I have 12 horses total.

With the scissortails make sure you get a group (at least 3) other wise they are skittish and tend to hide all of the time. There are other dartfish (blue gudgeon, bar gobies) that you could look into but I think the scissortails are the coolest of the dartfish. Very elegant in the way they cruise the tank. Although you can mix any of those dartfish, all very very peaceful.

As for macro's. I don't know the names too well. The red one on the upper left is red grape somthin, the green grass like stuff on the sandbed is caulera prolifera, the others I have know clue.

The prolifera is usually grow in alot more so that it looks like a seagrass bed but I had just pruned it back before that pic was taken. The horses really like it. Given a choice, the horses prefer the macro's to the gorgonians. At least all of mine do.

Mixing SH species is really not recommended do to bacterial problems. It has not worked out well for alot of people. I've had no issues maybe because of the larger tank and cooler temps or maybe just luck. So keep that in mind.

Richard,
Thanks for the information. Mine is a 40g tank so I was thinking that two pairs would work okay in my tank. I am seriously going to look into those scissortail dartfish. Good to know about the number of fish, as I would have just added two. Three would be a nice mix.

I am planning to order some macroalgae online. Did you get your macroalgae from an online supplier? Thanks for the info on the types of algae. I am especially interested in the caulera prolifera on your sandbed.

No I didn't order online. I own an lfs so I have just been snagging any interesting macros that show up on liverock or corals.

Looks like marineflora.com has a real nice selection.

In about 6 weeks it'll be time for me to prune back the prolifera so I can send you some if you can't find any.

wow 12 horses + fish in a 92? that's pretty heavily stocked. what kind of refug/sump/support tanks do you have?

Hmmmm...I hesitate to answer that. I don't want to turn this thread into another long debate thread.

So I'll just say that it is fully run on a Hiatt filtration system. So it has the recommended amount of tribase carbon as the biomedia, the recommended flow rate thru the carbon (10x per hour), and Hiatt's "Right Now" bacteria was added when I started up the tank. No skimmers or fuges are used on Hiatt systems.

Just do an rc search on "Hiatt" and you can find more info.
