Deep Dimension tanks

Hey all,

We're considering a deep dimension tank (the 300g, which is 72" X 36" deep X 27" high) like this and have a couple of questions:

1) Does anyone have one now? If so, is there a url that you can post here to direct me to your build thread or blog?

2) I'm not at all sure about the corner overflows. Do we think those would provide adequate circulation? (Corners get the least flow in my experience).

3) Our only "real estate" for filtration, etc. will be under the tank itself. Actually, that's a good reason for going with this footprint, but am wondering what we all think of the sump that Marineland offers with deep dimension tanks... is this a nitrate factory in the making, or a new and good idea? especially the biowheel that fit into their sumps.

TIA for you thoughts! We want to go big and I love looking lengthways down a tank, but it will take up a fair chunk of the room and we want to be sure it'll serve the reef well.

I have a 30" deep tank. I wouldnt rely on the corner overflows for enough flow. I added a 5800 gph closed loop and one Vortech (3000 gph) pump along with a 900 gph return pump. I would skip the Biowheel and go with live rock and live sand to maintain your filtration. The Biowheel will probably not finish the nitrogen cycle and you will be left with nitrates.
As for lights, I think T5's are out because of the depth. I would go with (3) 400 watt HQI metal halides.

Thanks for the reply: let me clarify.

I AM thinking of a closed loop for internal flow; I was thinking more about surface skimming when querying corner overflows.

Also, the tank is 36" front to back (deep) but only 27" high.

I'm glad to know your opinion of lights, though, since it's only a 3" difference to your 30". They have a combo light that looks pretty nice: uses three halides (250 w) and T-5s and LED moonlights.

+1 about rocks. A given. I'm wondering if the trays with mechanical filters/carbon/Purigen, etc. and biowheels would be a hindrance or a help to live rock/skimmer combos. Thoughts?

Well heres my build its still new i just got the tank today. (The same as you want) It was a pita to move. Heavy!!!!
But the 36 inch depth is SWEET! I wuld go with a custom cannopy and stand. You can get real wood cheaper than what marineland wants. IMO
Def get doors on thhttp://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1520182e side!!

My 72x36x27 Marineland gets to the house on Monday. I ordered mine without the corner overflows. I'm doing short overflow boxes on the ends with half in/half out dursos.

Here is mine...

Its just starting.. tank is here at the house, but I have tile to finish first. Soon as that is done, things will move rather fast to get it setup and plumbed.

I would go with a custom sump if I were you and stand. Their stand is short, so your skimmer options will be dictated by the stand height.

Trigger Systems is doing mine. It will be 74" long, with a 3 chambers, overflow/skimmer section, 4ft DSB and the return section. My steel stand is 8ft long to allow a larger sump.

As far as the overflows. Contact Marineland or your LFS, they have a configuration sheet of overflow options. Basically they will do the basic two corner, a center dual box on the back, overflows on the sides or customized boxes. Mine is coming off a wall to be an island and I had them do a square box with dual overflow/returns centered on the one end. Starphire on all 3 viewable sides, both long and front end.

I think he is only looking for build threads on

Check out this thread for lots of information:

A little info on these tanks and stands.

Marineland will do pretty much anything you want, custom-wise. Go through your LFS to get a quote. They will drill holes, move or change overflows, etc. FWIW, the corner overflows will work just great for surface skimming. Much of this will be dictated by the flow patterns you set up in the aquarium, how your return / other pumps are directed, etc. The main reason Marineland uses these corner flo type units is to eliminate the dead spots that are inherent to interior back mounted style overflows that many other companies use. With many of these you will notice detritus accumulation at the spot where the overflow boxes meet the back wall. The corner flo units eliminate this to a large degree.

Also, be aware that drilling your own holes, like for a closed loop, will void the limited lifetime warranty down to a one year warranty, as will using a stand not made by Marineland.

The sumps are not bad, but on the pricey side. If you are going to setting up a reef, I'd remove the BioWheel all together as your live rock will more than adequately handle the biological filtration. The media drawers are actually a nice feature, and the acrylic work is top notch.
As for the lights that marineland is launching, they are not 250w, they are 150w HQI and probably not sufficient for SPS corals. The units are fairly nice, with integrated digital timers and ballasts, they only have one cord coming out and are UL listed.

I have the 200 gal marineland deep dimension tank. I am using the current outer orbit two 250 watt HQI with the 4 actinic 54 watt T5 and led moon lights. I think I need to add more light due to the 36 inch depth, the back of the tank looks a bit dim for me.
