Mantis Shrimp Addict
Greetings all. I have read through some of the threads on Jawfish before I made this thread on them, lol. I have had a Blue Spotted Jawfish"¦loved him but he just didn't settle right with the 75 Reef. Then I had a Black Cap Jawfish and I loved him as equally as the BSJ. Which after I had Pearly Jawfish all didn't fair well in the 75 Reef even if I gave them 6-7 inches of mix substrate. (Note "“ those three Jawfish weren't all together. They were spread apart over a few years.) It was just all the other tank mates overwhelmed them.
I gave up until a few weeks ago I moved my "˜Spear' Mantis Shrimps to a different tank (, which I haven't had the time to post a thread about that.) Now that 55 Gallon is empty and I couldn't think of what I wanted to fill it up with. Its part of my twelve tanks system. This 55 is connected to the 55 Display Refugium and out to the sump. It's a low flow section with low light. I have placed twenty to thirty pounds live rock rubble (mostly unused BRS Pukani that I have broken up to .5 to 5 inches.) Then I added a mix of particle size of crushed coral and sugar grains of arrogate sand, that's been in my system for years (roughly sixty pounds). Once it filled over the live rock rubble, I hope it would leave random caves through out the sand bed. Which it did and some can be seen against the front of the tank. My hopes are that a Jawfish would burrow close to or on the glass. Then I bought forty-five pounds more of crushed coral substrate. I placed it directly over what I already have. It filled up whatever openings I have in the rubble. Then once I had everything covered and a good layer of crushed coral. I added thirty pounds of arrogate sand and now it reached between nine to twelve inches. I would think that would be enough substrate for a Jawfish colony. I am even planning on getting some more BRS Dry Pukani rock and crush it to two inches or less in size and spread it over the top. Yes?
Here is a bad picture of what I have so far. (Sorry couldn't find my CF Card for my Cannon Reble. So this was taken by the iPhone.)
Now what kind of Jawfish? I won't go for another BSJ as I want more then two Jawfish in this tank. First choice was a Pearly as it's cheap and they stay small. But I wanted something little more interesting like a Black Cap but I don't know them well enough if I can keep more then one of them together in a 55 Gallon. Then I thought one Black Cap and three Pearly Jawfishes. Then I read on here that the Black Cap would bully and steal the more passive Jawfish out of a burrow. I wouldn't mind that but I don't want it if it's going to lead to too much stress. Stress lead to sickness etc.
So if I would stay with just Pearly Jawfish I would get like four or five at most. As I read more the better or at least more then two to spread out the aggression. So, any thoughts on having one Black Cap and three or four Pearly?
Next as in tank mates I wanted these following to be in the tank. I don't know the compatibility of these buggers to the Jawfish. I wanted to add at least three or more kinds of Pistol Shrimps, Golden Coral Banded pair and some small Conches. That's it. No other fishes no corals maybe some low light or deep water Gorgonians or whatever Non- Photosynthetic items.
Thoughts, ideas, recommendations?
