I posted this by mistake in the sps forum, so I thought I'd move it here where it belongs.
I want to add a dsb to my system, but my sump isn't set up with the correct baffles to handle it, and I don't have the space to run a remote system. I have an idea that I think will work and I would like some input.
Is there any reason you couldn't take a flat plastic container like a cat litter pan, the one I have is a new 15" by 24" and 7" deep pan, and simply fill it with live sand and place it in the sump? Most of the complaints I hear about sand beds is that they trap detritus, etc. Since most of that type of stuff tends to settle in the lowest parts of the sump, it would be easy to remove it without disturbing the sand at all. If you ever need to do anything to the sand bed, adding or cleaning sand, all you would have to do is lift it out and set it on the table and go for it. No more standing on your head to work on it. And if you try it and decide a dsb isn't for you, it would take less than 2 minutes to remove it instead of 2 hours of siphoning and cleaning. Does anyone see any reason this wouldn't work?
