Deep tanks

Hi all

Over here there is a train of thought that says you can't go deeper than 3ft in glass with silicon or the tank will unzip, unless it is framed in some way.

Have things changed? If not how do you go about framing the tank (i have looked on here but that particular part of a tank build isn't widely explained)

I had never heard that more than 36" height was dangerous. I think you may have heard a rumor. Stress is easily removed with a trim brace or eurobracing.

I think a bigger problem may be lighting all 36" inches of depth if you want to keep SPS at the bottom of the tank.

Thanks for reply Pico, hopefully it is out of date advice, but even 10 years ago this was the advice from the UK's ornamental aquarium board, a sort of industry safety standard, so not a rumour. I'll continue to look into this a bit more.

Hey, I spoke to my supplier recently about a 5ft deep tank out of glass, can be done no prob, but you have to use a fairly thick glass beyond 36 inch, so the price goes up considerably, but it definatly is doable

the problem with going deeper is that you need to go thicker on the glass which gets real costly fast.

Doing maintenance on a tank that big is a complete pain...I have a 30" deep tank w/ hood access meaning I have about 36" to reach the sandbed...for looks I like the depth, but I'll never go more than 26" in the future, it just makes working on the tank too difficult. just something to keep in mind if you are thinking of going deep...

Know what you mean guys, I find it a chore on 24inch deep, next one should fall between 3' and 4' max.

Nice tank, is it from 4fishtank? How long did you have it and how do you like it?

Totally agree with you on this one. I have a 300g tank and it is 30" deep..canopy is about 20". Doing maintenance, putting frags and aquascaping is just too difficult to do. But then again, I'm a short guy  .

Yep, deep tanks can definitely be a lot more work depending on what you need to do. Definitely speaking from experince here.

Using any kind of handled cleaning tool gets progressively more difficult the deeper you go. By the time you are over 4 feet the amount of muscle it takes to apply the needed force to clean a tank wall makes you feel like you have been lifting weights all day.

Just rying to place anything such as a frag or peice of rock means having to use grabbers, dealing with poor visibility and a lot of trial and error.

My motto has always been: "go long, go wide"

Mine is 40" tall and 36" wide..i dont have any plans of moving stuff once its properly set. Thats why do your project study before putting the stuff.
