deep water acros?

I had a friend tell me that deep water acros need MORE light...(or more intense). This seems backwards, but then again not completely unbelieveable. So I wanted to start getting into some deep water acros....cause they looks great...and I just wanted to know, will they need more, less, or the same amount of light as my current frags/colonies are getting?

I believe this term mostly mean acros with smooth skin; not necessary that they are from deeper. Care and needs are similar to other acros.

I dont use t5's so i cant comment on the lighting. deepwater is just a description for smooth skinned acros. doesn't necessarily mean they are from the deeper parts of the reef.

wow, really? I have never heard this...then again I never looked it up till now. Good to know. Won't he be surprised to find this out..haha.

I believe the rationale behind that thinking is that the currents are much stronger at the top region of the reef and acros tend to grow thicker with more corallites in stronger current. just look at the a. Abrotanoides and a. humilis corals. Those are low tide corals where waves are very strong

here's a coral database sdmas created. you can see where these deepwaters are found in the reef. hope this helps. as long as you have clean water and sufficient lighting flow parameters, etc they will color up anywhere in your tank
