Sully, I don't think I've ever seen that kind of growth.....

BTW, glad to see that they are doing well!

If that is what it appears to be (Sun Coral (Family:Dendrophylliidae Genus:Tubastrea)) then.....They prefer strong water current that is necessary for polyp expansion during the night. These are a non-photosynthetic coral and could care less whether they are in high or low light. As far as feeding is concerned, these should be fed daily. Some people remove the coral into a separate bowl for feeding so as not to pollute the aquarium with the excess food that these require.

There are also Black Sun Corals (Tubastrea micrantha) that are becoming more commonly available. I would keep my distance from these. This species is from depths much lower than the other and needs very intense laminar flow. I don't think that they look as cool as the orange ones anyway.

I've seen these on sale alot lately and it may not be a bad time to try one out if you have the urge to do so.

They are Tubastraea aurea, golden cup coral. There seems to be an abundance of the regular sun coral around. Too bad they don't last too long in most tanks.
Here's a bad pic of the 2 in my tank, you can see the difference.

i am aquiring a sun coral later this week
i was planning to feed it thawed frozen mysis/brine shrimp

i ve read theyre night feeders
does that mean i shoul feed them in the dark?
i was thinking atinics only
any tips?/?

Sun corals like shade and flow and Food, lots of food, that's why they often fade out in tanks.
The picture doesn't show it well but the Sun coral colony gets no direct light, that's the way they like it.
The Dendros don't seem to bothered by direct bright light.
Both love to eat, the Sun corals often stay closed til early evening, then stay out all night.
Easiest way to feed them and not have your fish pulling the food out of the corals, feed them after lights have been out a half an hour or more, they should be all out looking for food. A turkey baster is a good way to feed them.
Another pic just before lights out.

They want to go to Bob Chinn's, So yeah, I'll take em.
Got up today to find my tunze 6080 had fallem somehow and was blasting my Dendros, they look fine now, I hope they stay that way.

I thought they might be available locally... If anyone ever goes in on a group buy again, let me know. Unless someone wants to sell me one of their babies.

Jeni, I'm not sure how to frag them yet. They are so different than other corals. When I first got them, I'd see what I thought was a piece of rock on them, turned out to be their skeleton.
If I ever do frag them, you're not first, but you're right up there.
If anyone finds some, I'd be up for another group order, too.
