It is the branching dendrophyllia that you are talking about that won't open. They are often listed as Australian dendrophyllia. They are the branching type. the largest size of the polyp are usually no more than a dime. They look very similar to sun coral, but their color is still orange center and gold tectacles. They do come out and feed, but a little harder and it takes longer time for them to adapte to the new environment. Alaways shaded, low light low to med flow will make them happy. I had a couple of different colonies of this type of dendro before, but once I got my hand on the other dendro I gave them away.
On the other hand the one that opens up most of the time, especially in shaded area or at night are the cluster type of dendrophyllia. They are listed as Japanese Dendrophyllia (Jumbo dendro, or fat head dendro) They are much prettier IMO and easier. They can be accumulated to full light and feeding in the day time. They like very indirect flow, if the flow is indirect, they can even place right underneath of the SPS even when the flow is high. Lighting, start out with shaded or low light and then in about 2 months of time, it can slowly adapted to much high light and feeding in day time.
