Dendrophyllia

Just wondering if anyone out there has any tricks on keeping dendros? I have had my colonies for 2 years now and have had some fading of the color. They went from white base and dark orange head to a lighter yellow base with matching head. I have seen pics of colonies that people are keeping for several years and they have retained the original color. Any secrets out there?

I feed mysis shrimp and rods food. I feed 3 to 4 times a week and I have placed them down in the tank under a shelf in the rock work. Not much flow to speak of or light. Do you know if the dendro could get its color back to the way they were when I purchaced them, or are they just going to be this color forever?

I supplament my feeding on them with the occasional formula one cube. It seems to help them retain color, and they gobble it up. I hae had them over eat the stuff, so be careful.

Thanks for the replys! I didn't think that you could over feed them! I have given them quite a bit of food before a trip or if I were going to be gone for a few days- that is good to know! Has anyone been able to restore color in their dendros?

I feed mine PE mysis... They maintain a nice orange color... Also if you strip your tank of nutrients it might bleach them out a bit...

Ive only had mine a few weeks and is bright orange. I feed it about every 3 days..Randy my water is nutrient poor do you think it will fade ..

Dave~ I know you run zeovit.... Do you dose the LPS aminos or any other AA's??? I've found that has helped some of my Aussies that lost color in my SPS tank...

I don't think you'll have a problem as long as you feed them regularly... I never had problems losing color in my Dendros in my nutrient poor tank... I know plenty that have, but I always figured my color remained because I fed often... :)

yeah i have a red dendro coming and am somewhat nervous that its going to lose its color. i will basically feed it everything i possibly can to ensure it keeps that redish orange coloration.

yeah im on zeo but have not done any aa . i was useing saliferts aa for a few mths.. but did not see any pro or con to it so i stoped useing it ... but the dendro and a cup coral are my only lps

Dave~ I would only dose AA's if you start seeing a color loss... I'm sure you'll do fine as everything in your tank is thriving... :)

Tyler~ Be carefull in what you feed them only in that they will ingest and then expell some items... I know plenty of people that feed theirs silversides, but mine don't seem to like them... They'll take them in and then spit them out when the lights go out... For the unwary reefer its a good way to pollute your tank... I guess just make sure they are actually consuming the food you give them and not just spitting it out when you're not looking... :D

i'm gonna go formula 1-2 pellets, mysis, brine, cyclops, frozen formula 1-2 cubes, oyster eggs, but definatly wont go silversides been reading some bad reviews on them lately so gonna be staying away from it.

i just hope i dont lose it right away i will cry lol

thats a healthy cocktail of foods. Be careful though. You will want to get on a schedule. Say mysis on Monday, oyster eggs on tues........ You get the point. You should also be sure you have fed your fish well before you try to feed them. I have had a tang take a chunk out of mine before to get at the mysis. that it just ate. Just my two cents. By using a schedule you will be able to track how much they are eating, and also if any one thing they like more. Also if you ever have a strange reading on any tank checks you can cross check with you feeding routine. I have found that mine don't like the pellets. You can try it, but i have not heard of much success with them eating it. They just don't seam to "grab" onto it. Ok i'm ranting. sorry.

I don't like feeding corals pellets either... I had to move my Dendro to another tank because my Chevron was picking at it...

This thread needs at least one pic... ;)

my acans loved pellets. I will try everything other than silvers and pellets then....

That pic is awsome, i cant wait to get it now!

and i agree with acrodave "Show Off"

tyler if you want to maintain the red color, I would try to stick with like colored foods. like cyclops, brine shrimp (even though they have very little nutritional value.) Formula 1.... you get the picture. I have noticed that in my experience, however limited it is. Corals get most of there color from what they are eating. I have been trying to play around with this concept. I have a couple heads of duncans, that i have been feeding each head a different "color" diet. I have only been doing this for two weeks now, however when I get more concreat results I will post in these forums. So far all the heads that I have denied green foods, have begun to "bleach. More like the green
center portion, has lost some luster, and begun to match the tentacles purple color. Could be coincidental. I look forward to letting you all know the results.
