Dendros

Mike, I'll try and take of it tomorrow. It is in a spot where a pic is kinda hard to take. But, I'd say the regular color; orange with bright orange tentacles is nicer. But, I'll let you judge for yourself.

rutz, how is the dendros doing for you? Are you having fun feeding them? Its fun to feed them and see them shove the food into their mouths!

My dendros are doing fantastic...it's amazing the size and how much they can actually eat, I read in your thread that you ordered from Captive Reef, what'd you get, and how are they doing?

rutz, thanks for asking, I got some more dendros for my tank from Mike. They are doing very well.......Mike gave me a bunch of duncans for free! Not the boring colored duncans, but I got some that are almost bicolored/tricolored.

The duncans look great, almost resembles dendros a bit. How are the duncans in your tank?

What have you been feeding your dendros?

Mike

I feed ,y dendros whatever I feed my fish. Sometimes brine, mysis, or squid.

My duncans look, ehhh... Where did you put yours? Placement?

Feeding is key with duncans, they like medium lighting and medium flow. I had mine in the same spot since march and then in the end of August I finally got them to eat more often by turning off the powerheads and just letting the food sit on them.

Has anyone found that dendros close up for a day or two at a time for no good reason.

Got a decent shot of one of mine this morning.

Guys, the secret to fatting your dendros up to OBESE status is to feed it SILVERSIDE!!!!

Don't even bother with mysis, that's like lean cuisine compared to bits of silversides, which is like a triple decker cheese burger laced with steroid.

Try that out and you'll see a difference in flesh size, I promise you.

GL.

scissorhand, the only thing with feeding large pieces of food like silversides is that if its tooo big the dendro will spit it out and then you will have food particles in the water rotting, etc.

Also scissorhand, do you have dendros? If so, can you show some pics of yours eating a silveside? Are you feeding them whole silversides or chopped?

Thanks
Mike

I personally only feed mysid and in a matter of less then three months I have at least 4 babies now open and feeding as well they are growing like a plague in my tank. Mine will close up for no reason from time to time but i just assume its a hermit crab that bumped it.

I've tried other various foods but continue to feed my dends mysis and crushed flakes.

Mine will also close up once in a while but only for like an hour and then open up fully again. Never closed for like a day or more.

no no no, I got rid of mine a long time ago. It was getting to the point where it was becoming more of a chore than a pleasure.

I believe mine was the Coccinea specie. I bought 2 heads and at one point got up to 12 babies.

You will need to grind up the silverside with a spoon. It's very easy.

You thaw it in a bit of saltwater, wiggle it around a bit and it'll thaw.

Use spoon to grind up the white meat into small little pieces. Only use the white meat. Discard the intestines and head and bone. Those are no good and will only foul up the water.

I then used tongs to feed individual heads.

Try doing that for 2 years. I couldn't keep up sometimes and then some heads will die. When I start feeding them again then 2 smaller heads will form within the former's skeleton.

Good times. Sold it off a year ago. Beautiful coral but what a pain.

I'll try to dig up the picture of my obese dendro tomorrow.

Believe me I also tried mysis and then sinking pellets as well (convenient right?) but always went back to silversides because I felt that they got fat on that the most.

Don't feed a lot. Example, half a silverside cut into small pieces will be more than enough for 2 big heads and several small babies.

Sorry if this is TMI.

I have fed silversides before to dendros, they seemed to like it, imo cutting up silversides while they are still frozen allows you to cut pieces easier and to also put the unused half back in the freezer without it thawing out and going bad.

What kind of growth rate can I expect out of my dendros?? I have been feeding them 2 or 3 pieces of mysys about 2 times a day.

I feed mine squid and baby scallops. The heads on my dendros are about the sizes of quarters closed up and about 2.5" across when opened.

neyugn0w01, yeah squid and scallops would seem to be similarly as meaty as silversides or even more.

Here was mine:

rutz81, if fed correctly and religiously, you can expect to see small babies popping up every other week.

but there are different species of dendros, and whatever is in the picture was the one I had experience with.

when the babies are small, I believe their support system is interconnected, because you can see the babies' flesh getting fat and puffy even if you only feed the mom.

scissorhand, thank you so much for your response and letting me know about silversides. I will try it myself and let you know how it goes.

As for new babies, my dendros haven't budded new babies in a while, I wish they budded more babies.
