detrivore kit or live sand?

So I set up my tank in Sept 07 w/ dry sand and some of that CaribSea live sand. I used 3 pieces of small LR to seed a bunch of dead rock. Well, after 4 months, I don't see any worm trails in my kind of DSB, 3" in most places. I've seen that on www.ipsf.com and www.inlandaquatics.com you can purchase detrivore kits which include different kinds of worms and beneficial "stuff." Would it be worth it to purchase these for $75-99 plus shipping, or just buying a couple of pounds of live sand from lets say premium aquatics? I don't really have any local reefers that I know so it's not like I can just go get a cup of stuff from someone, so ordering it's about my only option. TIA.

Well the Live sand in the bags is useless, the detivore kits are really good if your going for a DSB and it's necessary.

what about buying the aquacultured live sand from premium aquatics, do you think there'd be enough goodies in there? The reason the other product is $70+ is because it comes w/ worms (bristle & spaghetti), pods (cope & amphi), mini stars, some snails, etc. So they're guaranteeing a certain quantity of everything whereas if I buy 2 lbs of aquacultured live sand I'm taking the chance at getting nothing, unless someone's bought the stuff and knows that it comes loaded?

if your going with a DSB it's necessary to get the detivore kits and you have to recharge the kits every 2 years, thats why dsb can be costly.

Find a local reefer with a nice established sand bed then offer to buy him/her a few beers for a cup of sand. $20 in niceness, is much better than $100 in something that might not be worth a toot.
