Devil's Hand help...

I had a nice huge Devil's Hand Leather. See pics below. It was huge and opened up really well when I first got it. (Although, unless it's got small ones, I've never seen good polyp extensions.) Now part of it has fallen off the rock and it's not looking so good. How do I reattach it to another rock or rubble? Everything else in my tank opens up really well. All parameters are excellent. Nothing else is dieing or looking dismal.

Here it is when I first got it....

This is what 1/2 of it looks like now. The other half is in the crevice between the rock. I've got to find it a better home. Also, don't mind the xenia in the back, the lights had only been on a few minutes so the xenia is not flowing very good yet.

IME, Devils Hand requires high light and high flow, and I never really got t those beautiful white polyps until I got my PO4 down.

Hope that helps, good luck!

Hi Af hall, sorry to say looks like some kind of tissue necrosis. You could try to cut away the sections of melting flesh, and with any luck be able to save some pieces. I had damaged sinularia that I got from the LFS. Needles to say it didnt last long within days it was gone, no amount of fragging could save it.

Thanks for the info....
Do all Devil's Hand leathers have polyp extensions? Are there some that are so tiny that you don't notice them or some that don't have them at all??

Yes this is my understanding...

I am not familiar with any Devils finger that has polpys that are so small as not to be seen.
IMO, the one in the picture should have polyp extension.

Well, I agree with you but I've never ever seen polyp extensions on this particular devil's hand.... Hmmm..... Wonder what is going on and why?

I would say it probably hasnt been well for awhile.

I am no expert but my guess is its a bacterial infection, possibly it could be remedied with a lugols dip. I've never done this myself so I cant give you details on how. The best way I can describe what happened to mine was the infection actually gets into the (vascular ?) system of the coral and pretty much destroys it from the inside out. Finally all your left with is a little pile if spicules. It happened very quickly with mine and completely consumed it within days.
