Diamond blade band saw

I think Bill has a similar type of saw which he used for fragging his acans. I'd check with him and get his opinion.

Mike,
Brian Fragged up one of his acans yesterday and you would laugh your behind off on how he did it. I couldn't believe my eyes when he did it. I held on to the acan, he took a big a$$ bolt cutters picked a spot and whammo it was done. The heads were all nice and puffy within minutes!!!!!!

to tell you the truth i think if you make the break or cut as fast as posible its less of a shock for the coral and they bounce back quicker..

I use either a tile saw or a thin diamond blade on a dremel. i'd love a diamond blade band saw, but just don't have the room for one.

what kinds of corals are you intending on cutting?

I plan on cutting up some acans. I figure with a diamond blade band saw I would have a little more control over the cut VS. just hacking it with a bolt cutters..Beside if you needed to make a long cut (splitting a colony in half) you would need a tile saw or band saw.

Well there are probably about 50 ways you can break/cut/frag acans and you are probably right about the band saw giving you the most control. just make sure the cost is worth it for getting that.

btw, neither of your links worked for me. They both had "..." in them like you pasted them instead of putting them in as URLs.

Now they both work...I also figure when I decide to tile the bathrooms, I could switch the blade, and use this saw for any curves.

You can cut them many ways but I asked Todd at Cherry corals what he used and he said a band saw. His were cut perfect when I got them.
They arent cheap though.

They would also be nice for cutting stuff like favias and other brain type corals. could get a nice precision cut.

I know this sounds silly but I prefer to have corals that break along whatever line they choose. To me it looks better and more natural. I know over time you won't be able to tell. Its all personal prefference. If your going to be doing tiling though I would go for them lines though so you can get more use out of it.

I have fragged tons of Acans, including a $550 rainbow (my avatar) with no problem with the bolt cutters. I know it sounds crazy, but it works fantastic and also looks more natural with them breaking where they want to. If you want I have a number of acans that need to be fragged, your more than welcome for a demo.

What if you had a longer piece you wanted to cut down the middle? Do you think it would be better to just score the bottom(depending on the thickness) and then bust it?

Cutting it the long way down the middle may be a little more difficult, but Eric is right, the bolt cutter is amazing, he just got a frag of my "Mint & Rust" Aussie Acan and was speechless when I fragged it for him! Something you want cut that may be very long may not work unless you are going to do several pieces of the frag. Let me know, I have about 4-5 different colors of Aussie Acans.
