Diatoms Alge

I am battling with a form of diatoms alge.

It is killing me! What is the best way to rid my tank of it. It comes on so strong. I recently put in a new light bulb for my compact and it seemed to have triggered something. yesterday I had my water tested and according to my fish guy, my nites were a little high but nothing to trigger something like this. I usally test on my own, but they had no more test kits except for their own. ANYway, I have never seem anything like this. I can completely clean my tank, and two days later my sand is completely covered. It has now spread over my rocks and starting to get on some of my polups. It is weird though becuse it can be removed so easy. Anyone have any ideas of what I should do? I am honestly thinking about just shutting down.

New light bulbs are stronger then the ones you replaced (obviously), the tank needs to aclimate to the new intensity.

Give it a week or so and it should clear up on it's own.

I am having the same problem from when I went from 65w pc lighting to 200watt t-5's. I tested my water and everything is great. I went ahead and cut back on the amount of time I let my lights stay on, to about 6-8 hours and it seems to be working. The algae is starting to go away.

I was having the same problem over the past week and a half. After cutting down the "lights on" time, it has practically cleared up in just 3 days. I have read that it is common for all setups less than 6 months old.

I will give it a shot and see what happens. I just dont want the alge to creep out of the tank and overtake my house : )
