Diatoms? Is it normal to have a cloudy/milky tank?

Hi. My tank is one month old. The cycle is complete but I have not added any fish yet. My tank is cloudy. It looks somewhat normal from the front but when I look through the side I cannot see out of the other side of the glass. My tank is only 30 inches long. I also notices some small brown spots on the glass. Diatoms?

Good news is I found a pod today. But is this normal? I dropped some carbon in the tank but am wondering how many people have experienced this. Thanks. :hmm4:

Sounds pretty normal.. Try the carbon and see how it goes..

and yes sounds like diatoms on the glass..

Tank is still cloudy today. The top of the water also has this oil slick look. I have poke it with my finger and break it up.

That "oil slick" is protein film.. If you don't have a sump/overflow (which would suck it down and remove it) then you will want to point a powerhead towards the surface to create some agitation there to "knock" it down..
