I have a problem with diatoms i believe. I have just set up my aquarium and there seems to be this brown algea that has grown on the tops of all the rocks and the sides of the aquarium. It is brown and contains bubbles that are released into the aquarium. I am using a hang on the back filter temporarliy until my sump filter comes in sometimes later on this week. The steps I plan to take are to get my protien skimmer up and running and then to use some sort of silicate remover in the sump. Let me know what else I can do to remove this.

Raw, there's tons of info on the new to the hobby forum, but this all sounds normal, everyone goes through this stage and for a new tank, its not uncommon for this to happen sporatically for 6mths, with small outbreaks. Get a good clean up crew, a good skimmer and use rodi water. A fuge also helps as well. Just try to get the nitrates down and in control and this won't happen. But time is what really helps, be patient. : )
