i forgot what i do with these.... let them run their corse, or get snails.

i am pretty sure that they are a good sign though, right?
 
Diatoms are harmless unicellular algaes that are photosynthetic...they actually serve as food for many marine organisms. Wiping the glass every few days gives your tank a nice little dinner of diatoms.

and how long do they take to go away?

if i remember correctly, they go away basically when the tank balacnces out correct?

Correct, but they will also accumulate on the glass every 3-4 days and that is when you just clean it off with a magnet.
