Did I kill it?

I just sprinkled calcium in the tank and now my red mushroom has it guts coming out the top and it is oozing white slime stuff and is shrinking before my eyes, did I just kill it?

I think I'm having a duhhhhh moment, my brain coral is letting off all kinds of white slime too and the galaxea closed up, I only sprinkled 3 teaspoons in the tank ... I take it I wasn't supposed to sprinkle it on anything?

When you say "sprinkled" calcium, I am assuming you mean kalk powder. If it is, Calcium Hydroxide (aka Kalkwasser or Kalk) is pretty insoluble in salt water and should never be directly dosed to the tank in powder form. It has a pH of over 11 and can directly effect livestock. Basically, not only can it raise pH, it can rain particles on corals and severely burn delicate tissues. It should always be mixed with Ro/di and slowly dosed or dripped to the tank over many hours.

As far as the corals, I am not sure what the prognosis will be. Given their reaction, I would do a major water change.

it is tropic marin bio-calcium and of course now I read the instructions and it says to sprinkle the stuff onto the surface of the water where the flow is and not to sprinkle over livestock hee hee, my mistake guess I learned me lesson for the day

The red mushroom is smaller than it was, the galaxea is back out and the brain looks the same, guess time will tell but I think they are gonna all be ok, lesson learned

Hi,

Again think & ask before you do something like this. The next time you might have a big diaster on your hands.

I only read the instructions half way through, saw how much to put in and to sprinkle on top of the water, stopped too soon sorry.
