Ok so I built a canopy for my 500 gallon tank. I'm trying to figure out if i can just rest it on the tank or do i need to attach it to the ceiling or something???

The tank is glass and its 8"x30"x38"
The canopy is just a frame built out of 2x4's

any help would be appreciated, I'm trying to keep this project moving.

The canopy for my 550 gal is going to rest directly on the tank but my tank has a powdercoated steel rim around the top so I feel pretty comfortable about this. I am considering picking up a motorized lift that will be able to lift the entire hood straight off the tank if I ever needed more access to the tank than I can get through the large opening at the front of the hood.

If you have a through the wall system, you might look into something like we are doing...use pocket door rails to roll the entire assembly off the tank for maintenance and/or cleaning...

The wheels (rated at 150#):

Probably won't work if your display is in same room as the tank equipment...
