Did You Know That?............

You should be more worried about the atrocious bycatch rates when eating your shrimp dinner, rather than their feelings. The shrimp are in there SOMEWHERE:

The rest of the dead fish are thrown back. There is as high as a 20:1 bycatch to shrimp ratio in some cases. And even though they have TEDs now, turtles still get caught. Thats why I Dont eat shrimp

Enviromental bs, like you have a clue where my shrimp comes from....there are dozens of outlets for farmed shrimp, ZERO, nada, none, no bycatch. Make mine fried with lots of cocktail sauce!

Oh, you mean like shrimp farms, where they are at temporary locations? Or the ones where it takes around 10 lbs (roughly) of food, consisting of smaller and lesser desired fish, ground and dehydrated, to feed one pound of shrimp? The same ones that destroy estuarian environments? Those ones, or do you have a secret source? So yes, its all environmental BS that is fabricated. Besides, fried shrimp isnt healthy for you anyhow, Im sure theres no trans fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, excessive sodium, etc, in that either, thats all hyped as well, right? lol. Get a clue.

I didnt know I was environmental BS.

My secret source?...lol...it's not secret, but being uneducated in the matter, you might not know about it. I mean freshwater, pond raised, as in hundreds of miles from any saltwater estuary. If you are going to climb on your soapbox and preach, make sure you have some idea of what you are talking about. Otherwise you look more foolish than you would probably care to. FRESHWATER pond raised, the same type of systems that produce tons of farmed catfish for the market. Environmentally friendly, sustainable harvest in inland, totally landlocked ponds, using commercially available feed.

Follow the link, read, and learn. I promise it won't hurt you and you might even be wiser for it.

If you'll notice, I'm also in Tennessee:D

That may be the case on some huge boats by big companys, but down here in the coastal waters of south Louisiana it is not that way at all, our nets come up with mostly shrimp.:)

hey both of you just stop argueing. oh and did you know that most fish food such as pellets and flake is made of fish ground up and dehydrated? read the ingredients. so i guess that we should stop feeing our fish too huh? its life and its always gonna be that way.

I agree bradbmbj, not all boats are like that. That much bycatch in the nets tend to crush the shrimp and make it worthless. Most captains try not to fill their nets with junk and ruin the catch, no money in squashed shrimp.
I lived in Florida for years before I moved to Tennessee and we caught all we could eat with dip and cast nets when the shrimp are running. It wasn't unusual for several of us to go shrimping and get over 100 pounds a night.

The fact is most of the shrimp you get is not from a freshwater farm. There are some that are great farms, I never denied that. Im just saying dont be fooled when you see farm raised. You were the one who got all offensive. People dont WANT to catch this bycatch, Im aware of that. But many large ships dont care. If you go to a restaurant and order shrimp, dont expect it to be sustainable.,

I wasn't arguing, I was educating...lol. Ok, I formally declare a truce!

I got lucky and got to go out on a trawler in Florida that fished for bait shrimp, the kind you buy live at the tackle shops. They pull the nets extremely often to avoid killing the shrimp. This also means most of the bycatch is tossed back unharmed. I got to go through all of it as it was removed from the nets and found some awesome fish and inverts for my tanks.

i agree that crabs must remember something, I had an emerald crab that liked to sit in a green birds nest. I doubt it was eating the coral but to be safe I scared it off the corals and pryed it off the rock to throw it somewhere else in the tank. The crab doesnt go near that coral anymore!

There are also lots of captains that drag smaller test nets to see if they are even on the shrimp... man I wish my dad wouldnt have sold his boat.

Hey bubbles129129, your crab got a lawyer and is suing for harrassment and illegal eviction. He is willing to settle out of court for his own tank ...lol

We used to have a Shrimp boat when I was a kid and we got mostly shrimp in the nets. Most of the fish that were netted were alive and flippin and would be back in the water before they knew what happened. That is of coarse unless we wanted a fish sammich :-P

FWIW I prefer my crab with a little Garlic Butter on the Side

fish sammich??? Now you went and did it, I want one but there's no fish without going to the store....or is there?...I wonder how a Tang and tatarsauce on wheat would taste?
