Different Overflow setups

I'm confused. There is a Bean animal i believe. A Herbie Method. Is there just a standard way of hooking up your overflows. Is one better then the other?

This is my first time plumbing a sump for a reef tank so let me know which one would be my best bet? Possibly a pic or two of your setup and maybe some advice. Nervous to start the plumbing journey.

There are three main ways:

1) Stockman standpipe
2) Durso (similar to stockman)
3) BeanAnimal or Herbie

If you google you will get the idea, they all have their pros and cons. Mainly durso and stockman work with air drawing in and therefore reduce the water flow and the herbie works with a full siphon and has more water flow (but is a little more sensitive and involved to setup IMO)

Ok with that said and this being my first time which method should i use.

You need to specify more info to be able to offer a suggestion. Basically all work, it's just about what you want.

Want silent? Want fail safe? Or quick and easy? Do you have lots of space or a little? Do you have long horizontal runs or not? Is the tank drilled already? How many holes? Would you be able to drill more? Etc etc.

i have Durso on my 180 with dual overflows.... its loud and annoying. so when i move its getting switched out to a bean

In my opinion herbie is the easiest and the most quiet! Just takes a little fine tuning to get it dead silent. Also since it's a full siphon it will flow more.

LOL i'd want all 3 Silent, Failsafe and quick and easy. But since i understand thats probably not possible i'd like it in this order. Failsafe, quiet then quick and easy. Space is not an issue. Tank is drilled - Dual Overflows in the center not corners. I believe 2 holes in each overflow. Don't want to drill more.

No i would think one would be your overflow with the herbie and the other your return. How big are the holes btw? 1"?

Ok i took pics of the tank i bought which already comes with plumbing that goes in the overflows. I'm assuming this is a Durso setup correct: If so i guess it would just be easiest going with this setup then trying the herbie method.

I'm upgrading into the same tank, and mine came with Dursos too.
I'm switching over to a pair of herbies, but there's not really a "right way" to do it. I think I've probably spent 50 or so hours total just researching that decision. Just hooking up the Dursos would've been a lot easier, but most people with Dursos are not happy with them. I figured I'd rather get it right the first time.

That's my issue its all there ready for me. But i also here a lot say their durso setups are silent as well. Strickland sent you a PM

Check out Glass-Holes they sell nice overflow kits that come with everything needed to install. Very nice quality products.

Durso is not silent... i have them on my 180 and its fairly loud

This tank is going downstairs in the mancave. It will not be in our living room where everyone sits all the time. Define not silent. Like so loud it is actually annoying to sit and watch your fish? Or tolerable and just wish it was completely silent.

OK a lot are saying convert the already put together durso plumbing i have and convert it to a herbie style method. Can someone please explain in detail. I have 2 overflows, does 1 overflow act as just the Return and the other act just as the drain? And if so on the return side there is 2 holes. 3/4inch and 1 inch because normally in the durso setup the Inch is the drain and the 3/4 is the return. So in a herbie style method do i plug one of those return holes and just use one for the return? Or do i still use both for the reurn but of different sizes. A little confused on how to setup the herbie method with dual overflows.

It is confusing. Herbies aren't designed for dual overflows so people do it different ways. The concern with having one for just return is that the water inside that weir will get stagnant.

I run the Herbie Drain in BOTH overflow boxes.
I come back over the top through Sea Swirls.
The above post by Reef Junkie 91 will get you all the information needed.
NO ball valves Gate Valves!
My only suggestion is-- IF you use a DC pump --DO NOT run anything else but the return.
I did & it can be a real pain to get & keep it set.

So for a beginner starting out and plumbing sump for first time maybve it would be in my best interest to just go with the durso method, get up and running and maybe somewhere down the line if the noise gets to me i can swap it out.
