Different wrasses

Hi guys,

I was just wondering what your personal experiences are with combining different wrasse species?

I already asked the question in my other thread aswell but in the "new to the hobby" part of the forum. I think that thread there is to far back already for people to notice and respond :sad2: ! It's also more about overall stock instead of a specific wrasse question, it kinda grew out of it... So!

My tank is about 200 US gallons. Is it possible to combine different wrasses f.e. :
Anampses meleagrides/twistii (as a pair?)
Paracheilinus cyaneus/mccoskeri (as a harem 1m/3f?)
Macropharyngodon kuiteri/geoffroy (as a pair?)
Halichoeres melanurus (as a pair?)

Simply find your old thread and 'bump it up' by posting a reply on it! No need to keep starting new threads.

Tank size may not be an issue, but be careful of your wrasse selection... You are picking out some tough ones to start off with...

The McCosker and Melanurus shouldn't be a problem as starter fish, but the other two may need a little more experience...

Same advice I was given a couple of days ago...

Possibly get the McCosker and Melanurus, and add the others when you have gained some more experience? There's nothing like a group of expensive fish dying on you for what seems like no reason at all to spoil it for you...

Thanks for the advice! The plan was to start with easier fish in the 1st place and work my way up... Plus I've got a LFS that has some exclusive fish and is renowned for their fish care and quarantine. If and when the time is right I'll probably give the tamarins or leopards a go!

I'm not planning on having alot of fish in my tank, currently I've got 18 fish I would like to give a go. Not too crazy I think for 200gl...

Yeah, Man. Timing and experience are the keys... I just cancelled my wrasse order due to construction at my home... I'm just too busy right now to give them enough attention to make sure they are progressing like they are supposed to...

I'll try next year when I have more time...

18 fish may be fine in a 200g depending on the fish type and size. Some small fish never stop swimming. Some larger fish barely move and can survive in a 180g, or so...

Just make sure your filtration and everything else can handle the load, and choose your fish wisely. There is nothing comforting about looking at an overcrowded tank with ich from stress. LOL...

Do you have a QT set up already?

I'm thinking of leaving out the coral beauty since I'm reading alot of nasty topics here about those. Unfortunatly though since there's nothing really like them that you can also find in other fish.

Don't have a QT tank though as I already spent alot of money on my current system. I've read alot of succes stories without QT's + I have a sump to strengthen up fish before they go into the display or to transfer them if things get hairy...

The LFS here has a very (very very) good rep when it comes to fish. I hope I can get decent specimens there, but according to alot of people on the belgian forum I'm on he's the man to buy from! They speak very highly of him atleast...

I've just read the tamarin primer! Exciting stuff and loads of information with cool pics. I hope that I can accomplish something like that in the future.
