dinoflagellates

Satori

Cancer Sucks
Has anyone had luck with removing dinoflagellates? It's the clear slimy snot looking stuff. I've had a little bit hanging on for the last year and a half. It's definitely not a nutrient issue, as I only feed the fish 1/2 cube of frozen brine shrimp per week, if I remember.

According to The Reef Aquarium once it's established it can live on next to nothing, even just the trace elements in the water. The book suggests raising the pH above 8.4 for a week using a kalkwasser drip. I did it for 5 days but it didn't do anything.

Water changes don't work since that just replenishes trace elements.

Any other suggestions?

i'm battling dinos in my nano right now, what a PITA.

i've heard about elevating the pH, but i've also heard that doesn't not work...

i've also read about people "blacking out" their tank for 2 or 3 days...but it seems like everybody that does that has success for about a day, then the dinos are back...

for me, i got busy, and i got lazy...so i'm on an agressive water change schedule right now. we'll see if it helps, but i don't really know what to tell you. i know, i know, i'm a big help.

here's a pretty good thread on fighting dinos, not sure if it will help you out, but there might be some good info in there for you.

I'll check out that thread tonight, thanks.

I've turned off my lights and will leave them off for a couple days. I'll let you know how that works out.

Those look like some great links, thanks. I have more reading to do tonight. Realistically, I'm going to be doing a 100% water change in a couple of weeks. When I go to the 180, I'm switching from IO to TM Pro.

BTW, leaving the lights off didn't do anything.

The dinoflagellates seem to taken care of itself. There's still a slight film where it used to be, but for the most part it's gone. Leaving the lights off for 3 days didn't seem to do anything. The only other thing I did was I haven't added any trace elements. Maybe that was it.
