Been reading around, and find out the algae in my tank is dinoflagettes. It kind of go away when the light off and it back when the light is on. Anyone know how I'd kill it?

It covering my zoas, rocks..everything

Hi

I just finished getting my tank rid of dinos after 9 month battle. The first mistake I did was to think they were diatoms and went about doing everything to treat them...changed RODI Unit, changed bulbs, changed salt, changed everything...nothing helped.
All my inverts eating the dinos died, my tang picking on rocks covered with dinos died..
They would go away when I turn my lights off for 3-5 days and then come right back a week later with lights on. I finally got tired and got rid of all my sand. Yes, removed all the rock, fish and coral...sucked all the sand out..Brushed my live rock clean...washed it in fresh salt water....got new sand from store and cycled my tank...now they are gone......and it has been 4 months since I last saw them....good luck...the one thing you need to do is to make sure its dinoflagellates and not diatoms.
Hope that helps

I don't think I'm ready to remove everything yet. This is what it look like in my tank.

I had it for a while... and then it seemed to subside.
I would blow them away and suck them out with a turkey baster when I had the chance.
I also fed less and skimmed more and eventually they were gone (at least to minimal proportions)

No worries Xenia. Check out this artricle: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-11/rhf/index.php
As the author concludes, the best way to reduce dinos is by reducing nutrients (by decreasing feeding and/or more aggressive skimming and nutrient export) and by increasing ph and thereby starving the organism of CO2.
What are your current pH levels. Do you add kalkwasser? If not you may want to consider starting. It's a great way to maintain higher levels of pH especially if added during the daytime.

I don't have a skimmer in my system, as I'm changing 2 gallons per week on the BC14. Also I don't add kalkwasser, I'm dosing the Kent 2 parts A&B daily.

I haven't test the pH levels.

Dinoflagettes is usually brown. You may be thinking of cyanobacteria.
