Ok thier is another thread around talking about the benefits of NSW. My questions is

Assuming that
1. You live close (ex: within 500 yards) to the water.
2. You can get all approiate permits.
3. $ isn't an issue

Could you put down a line which goes out lets say 1000 yards into the ocean could you pump NSW into your sump through a UV or Ozone filter to kill harmfull organisims. Not at a great rate like 500 GPH but more like 5-10 GPH so that its like a constant water change? THen just put an overflow on your sump and whatever is pumped in is just taken out.
Therefore all you need is pumps and the optional UV, Ozone to kill off incomming stuff.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe what you describe is basically what the Monterey Bay Kelp Forest aquarium does...

(Of course, at what point does it cease being an aquarium and become an artificial lagoon? )

Yep, did some Googling:

"An open seawater system pumps up to 2,000 gallons of seawater per minute through the Kelp Forest exhibit. Unfiltered by night, seawater runs through huge pressure sand filters by day."

So yeah, that's very doable...

I am not sure about the UV and O3, because I am afraid that it will kill alot of the plankton in the water causing them to rot into your tank.

Then what about pollution? Is the water over there good?

What about stormy water? How does your ocean water look after a storm? Like crap I bet. So what would happen to your tank?

How will you get the water to your house? Pump I suppose, but where will it sit? In the sand? The pump you need will need to sit out of water.

How will you power the pump? Extension cord? Linked a bunch together? How would you keep connections free of water?

You would need a huge pump to pump 1000 yards. Then to have it pump into your house. Can you imagen the head pressure you would need? So you are using a high powered pump. A high powered pump running on electricity will draw alot of power. Assuming you use your average 16 guage extension cords linked together, you would draw too much power over a long distance for those cords to handle. Then you would need to get 10 guage or higher to handle it.

You cannot have a 1000 yards of power cord laying on the ground. You are going to have to put it on a DIY telephone polls.


I am not saying that it is impossible, by all means do it. You are going to have a hard time doing it. It might not be even worth the trouble.

According to the little of information you have posted, you have not thought this through. Keeping you water free of water borned pathogens is the least of your troubles.

If you moved closer to the Ocean, you will have less trouble.

So I calculated what you would need. So you will need a Iwaki 20 RZT-2 or equiviliant/more.

I did the the least amount of things that will restrict your flow but still alowing it into your house.

I hope you own that 1000 yards of land you will run this pipe and cord, I doubt your county let you roll out a 1000 feet of anything on their property.

You have alot of work to do.

check out the southern california reefers section and look at the UCSB NSW thread. if you can get a few trash cans in the back of a truck, a drive up to SB once every two months will save you a big headache if your after NSW. it's free and available 24/7 to the public. let me know if you need any info on the setup. -

SeaCrop is in Port Huneme Harbor. We had a field trip there last month or so. They take their water right out of the ocean. HOWEVER, the pipes got several hundred yards into the ocean. They pump it into storage tanks, as there are only certain times when they pump, due to silt, tides and other factors.

That is the only water they use. They don't us O3 or UV, but it is filtered. Perhaps you could email them and they will explain their process.
