directions for a sump

ok guys I was wondering if any one has the measurments for building a sump? i want the first part to be refuge, skimmer, pump? anything will help

First thing you have to do is have the measurements for all of the stuff you plan on putting in the sump. After that it is variable nothing is set in stone. If you go to reefkeeping mag, it is linked to RC there is a good basic 3 part article about sumps. You will have to search it though because it is from past issues

Some additional thoughts...

Be sure your sump will fit under your stand (assume thats where ist goes). How it fits may affect your design.

Keep in mind where the drain exits from the display in relation to where it will enter the sump (may affect your ultimate design). btw...you will need some bulkhead fittings for the drain and return lines...be sure to get the correct size (example: a 1" bulkhead fitting actually needs something like a 1.5-1.75" hole in the tank to fit.)

Remember, all you really need for a sump is a tank/tub...no bafles, etc. are needed to fulfill this function. If you intend on incorporating functionally-specific areas into your sump, then definately plan ahead and get all necessary measurments like jaze said. If you go to the next club meeting, Ken has a very well designed sump...check it out (bring a pen and some paper! ;) ).

yess ta...i think most people forget this....maybe what they want is a sump/ baffled filtered system...not jnust a sump........flow rate is altered depending on type of system intended. if your on the computer go to any search engine and search "whats a sump" ....or "how to make a sump"...also add words like "variations in sumps " the info is endless...i was clueless but this type of search helped me greatly to focus my intentions and get better answers.
term sump was and sounded complicated but its not.......very simple idea once understood.

Just to get ya started, here is a diagram of my sump. It's a little more complicated than this, but this gives the jist of it. There are definately a million different ways to create a sump though. Let me know if you can't follow it or have any questions.

Trust kens designs. have seen them. biggest q is how much room you have and what you need to fit in there? to be honest, a refuge is sometimes better setup seperately but it all depends on setup. i.e. can you up a small shelf above the tank for the fuge> or is it in a bedroom where the lights are problematic? Personally, given the option, a fuge is better off seperate from a high flow sump for "smaller" systems (less than 200g). Can be quite a few creative ways to fit a fuge into a system, and all that is needed is a small powerhead feed and a bulkhead/gravity drain) but again is better to have an mixed sump system than none at all....

if u have any questions on how to build a sump i would be more then willing to help put one togeather for a 90 gallon set up and have now done a 180 the only major thing i will say is the bigger the better if u got the room and not a mjor problam if u make the sump remote from the tank..................remember to take in account the water in the pipes and any thing that will back siphon into the sump Very Important...
peace for now, if i can help please let me know.....

bye peace
