disappearing mantis....

OK,

I got a small mantis the other day. First (Friday) he dug out a burrow under the LR pieces in his tank, set up house and watched out his burrow holes for the day. Covered up his hole over night jsut as I expected and opened it up in the AM. All signs looking good.

Second (Saturday) day, he started coming out of his burrow to check out the snails in his tank. Didn't kill anything. Later in the evening I stuck a small piece of shrimp in the tank and he went right after it and had a very nice meal indeed.

Third day, I didn't see him. Since then I have seen him at all and he hasn't been closing his hole each night.

Well, today I took the LR pieces out of his tank chamber and I still couldn't find him, or a body. I then stirred up all the live sand and still no signs of him. He was also not anywhere to be found in the back chambers of the tank. I looked in the bigger tank chamber (which his chamber overflows into) and couldn't find him in either of the 2 pieces of LR (there is no live sand in that chamber.

I also haven't seen any bodies outside the tank. I am really stumped and have no idea where he is. It is only a 20L tank and is still light on the live rock so I just can't see how he's in there.

Any suggestions?

he may still be in the lives rock. when i got my smithii he made a temperary burrow. the at night he chiped a small whole in to a big whole and uses that as his permanent residence. if they are in the live rock, they wont come out even when it is not in water.

so..... I was watching TV yesterday and heard a bang bang sound coming from the tank and just smiled knowing that he was alive.

Well, it turns out that he went over the overflow and is now in a piece of LR in the main display tank. I don't have any teeth on the overflow so I'll let him stay in there until I do get some teeth built.

BTW: he was sitting there pounding away on an astrea snail and getting nowhere. I gave him another piece of shrimp and he's very happy!
