Disaster Strikes

Well, not really but I almost lost everything. (I still may) Last weekend my wife and I were away on a day that was seven degrees. Our electric went out when we weren't home which is usually not a big deal but the heat also went off. My home is well insulated but when it is seven degrees it does not take long for things to cool off. My tank went down to about 60 degrees and I don't know how long it was like that.
My moorish Idol was laying on his side gasping and the copperband butterfly was not much better. I raised the temp and noticed ich starting to be noticable on the moorish Idol. I know there is ich in my tank and was always in there, especially because I put in a goby a couple of weeks ago that I had to remove to treat. Anyway, the next day I was sure I would lose the Idol since he was breathing very hard and having trouble swimming. I don't have a large extra tank so the only thing I could do was fresh water dip him in fresh water and formalin. The next day the spots were blurry looking which is the way they look after a fresh water dip. Of course he was still not the healthiest so I did it again. That was a few days ago. Today he seems fine and is eating like always. The only difference is that because of the ich he lost some of his fins due to a secondary bacterial infection that usually accompanies ich. The copperband also seems totally "cured" although I did nothing to him. Many of the smaller gobies lost some fins and one was so covered with ich that I don't know how he was swimming. They also seem fine except for some lost edges on their fins.
Lowering the temperature is one really big cause of stress and in that state fish will succomb to almost anything.
I also ran a diatom filter on the tank all week. The other strange effect is that I now have a hair algae bloom. It is not on everything but in some places it is two feet long. Really wierd, but interesting.
One more thing. I don't advocate fresh water dips for curing ich. It is only a treatment meant to remove some paracites to make it easier for the fish to breathe. It will not cure a fish. Only copper and a few other less well known medications will do that along with the fish'es immune system.
If I can nurse them back to the state of health that they were before all will be fine. I actually went out looking for new fish because I really thought they were goners.
I set up a tank with copper for the gobies but I couldn't catch any of them so they are still in there.
I also know the life cycle of ich very well and I know that they are just waiting to complete a cycle to re-infect the fish so it is a race to get the fish healthy before that happens.
Anyway, Have a great day.

Sorry to hear about your dilema Paul, we just lost power du to a tornado but luckily it was in florida so the cold wasnt an issue. We lost some small freshly cut frags due to low circulation but everything else was fine. Funny how weather can affect us all in the same week for tottaly different reasons. Our thoughts are with you and your fish, hope all turns out well.

Flfirefighter13 Thanks, Actually it's the algae that I find more wierd than the ich. There must have been something die like some snails, works etc that caused it. It is the fastest growing longest hair algae I have ever seen.
I am going out now and it is about 18 degrees or so. I hope the heat doesen't go off
.
Have a great day,
Paul

I had some HA grow on me overnite about 6 months ago, went from a clean back glass to completely covered in 3-4" algae within 48 hours. I never figured out why, water tested the same before and after outbreak and once I put a few large turbo snails the HA was gone in 3 days. It was a 75 and from what I found no one I spoke with had ever had it grow that fast. To this day I havent fiured out what happened but the algae hasnt returned in that tank even with the snails being removed. the tank had been established for just over ayear when this happened, long story short Ill be watching closely to see how the life of your outbreak goes. I thought 4" was impressive, 2' has got to look kind of neat at least:)

Good luck with your fish Paul.
Are you removing the hair algae manually or just letting the algae trough out compete it?

Thanks sunfishh
I am removing the rocks that don't have corals growing on them and just putting them in a plastic garbage pail in the dark for a week or so.
It is not growing on everything but about half the rocks. Something must have happened when the tank cooled off to bring this on. It will get back to normal in a week or two.
So far the fish seem fine with most of the ich gone. Of course, that could come back unless I can get everything back to normal as fast as possable.
Take care.
Paul

Paul, I'm going to agree that your suspicions are correct that your hair algae is indeed related to your tank tamp and the associated die off that followed.

However, while smails and the like seem the obvious candidates, I'm guessing it's actually the smaller critters that are the root of the problem.

When you factor in all the microfauna and zoo plankton that probably took a hit you are looking at a surprising amount of organic biomass. Not to mention, who knows how badly the temp swing may have affected your nitryfying bacteria levels.

I say watch your water parameters for the next few weeks and then see where you're at.

putawaywet. Besides the temp swing the circulation was off for maybe a day also. I think you are correct about the small creatures maybe dying. I diden't really have any snails that I could think of but I do have loads of brittlestars, amphipods etc.
I know something was affected and I also know that in time it will all work itself out. In three decades I am sure there is a lot living in there especially in the RUGF.
At least none of the higher animals died.
Take care and have a great day.
Paul

I'm glad to hear the tank is on the mend. Wishing a speedy recovery to your fish and peace of mind.

I always learn something from your posts, Paul.
Correct what you can and the tank will take care of the rest.

Are you still feeding your Idol the mixture of banana and plaster of Paris? That was one of the most interesting things I have read here.

GobyJohnKenobi, funny you should mention that, I fed him that yesterday. Maybe it's the new Ich Cure.

I have to go to the paint store today for some more "food" :eek1:

Now I am ready for another disaster. I just picked up a new generator which is very quiet. My old one was just too noisy.
If anyone wants a 4000 watt noisy generator for about the price of a clownfish and a half, let me know.
In the meantime I am ready for today's ice storm.
I also need to get more Plaster of Paris

I will update. The moorish Idol still has some ich and so does the copperband butterfly. Most of the hair algae is gone. I caught the two mentioned fish and have them in a 15 gallon tank with copper. After I catch the other fish I will have the opportunity to do some experiments with ich that I have not been able to do.
I am trying to get a medication from a Vet cousin of mine and I will let you know how it turns out. The only problem I have right now is that the Idol won't eat in a bare tank and since I feed him four times a day I am not sure what I will do with him. If I don't find a solution soon I will have to put him back in the reef with the ich.
This also will give me time to do some drastic re aquascaping with out the fish in the way. Anyway have a great day.
Paul

PS if anyone has a large spare tank and doesen't mind babysitting a moorish Idol with ich. let me know

Thanks Sunfishh, the Idol is going crazy in the 15 gallon tank and I know he will not last long there. But on the brite side my tank is recovering from the four feedings a day I was giving him.

Sorry to hear about this Paul. I wish you were closer. I could easily babysit the idol for ya. :(

Have you asked for help in your reef club forum?
