are they worth anything because I am none too excited about the quality of fish from AC (bought a whole lot of fish there and don't have a single one to show for it), EB (seems ok but not alot to choose from bought my first fish there saturday so I will see how it goes) and fins (saw a few fish dead and another few dying there yesterday as I thought I would stop by to see if things had improved...they haven't).
Buying from live aquaria is my only option and due to shipping costs I don't order as much as I would like.
I have bought fairy wrasses. Probably around 7-8 of them. Only one made it for any amount of time until he made it to the sump and got caught in the return pump.
I bought a lubbocks the other day and it died within a day and a half so I went back and got the other one they had as it looked healthy and it died in less than a day. I was so p*ssed. I have been looking for a solar wrasse for some time and every one they have gotten in is dead before Ken can call me to come and pick one up. He emailed me to tell me they were getting some in and I told him that I am done buying fish there. Never heard back from him.
The carpenter wrasse from ebay is doing well so far although it is a little on the smallish side. I plan on trying to fatten him up good before adding him to the display.
For the record I am not badmouthing the critter as I really like some of the people that work there I have just have had terrible luck with their fairy wrasses and I don't have money to throw away.
Interesting. I bought a lubbocks from them that did great for around 6 months until it went carpet surfing. I also bought my cbb there about 1.5 years ago and its doing great.
Maybe we can hook up and you can share your secrets as I am tired of losing fish. The two fish that I have that have been with me for nearly ten years were bought at a store that no one in their right mind would have shopped at. I used to know the guy that ran the fin den in donelson (bought my first setup from him when I was 15 back in the late 80's back when the critter didn't even do saltwater) and I would stop in from time to time just to visit. Bought a few fish here and there and they are alive and kicking to this day. Maybe SW fish need some nicotine as it was like a pack of cigs in there at all times.
I still need to join the club and start enjoying some of these discounts I was going to join at the swap but spent all my money on frags and haven't had time to investigate since.
One thing that the lfs MAY DO IS FLOAT AND DUMP WHICH MAY STRESS THE FISH OUT and cause the lack of sucess is the only thing I can think of for your poor sucess rate with local bought fish. Where as you properly acclimate the fish from an online order and the fish is going from the wharehouse to you and not the wharehouse to the store to you essentially taking out a lot of stress by the extra store stop off and cut and dump maybe? I doubt it is any different supplier than other places but just a thought?...???...
with all due respect the "problem" fish that I have had terrible luck with is the lubbocks wrasse which is known to be collected in the Philippines. It is possible to obtain quality specimens from the Philippines and I feel it is the responsibility of the LFS to seek out the reputable people and obtain there fish from them.
The other side of the coin is the fact that I have been trying to get a solar wrasse for over a year. Everyone this particular store gets in is dead before I can even get over there to look at it. That speaks volumes to me.
At any rate I didn't mean to hijack this thread by any means. I simply asked if the jungle place was any good and I never got a response so I will take that as a no.
