Hello,
I was wondering if someone might be able to give me a explaination as to what happened to my leather corals. I have a 120gal reef tank which hs been set up for 4 years. I HAD a very nice and large devils hand finger leather that was approx 10"-12" across when fully opened and had lobes as long as 3-4". I also had a piece that i had fragged off several months ago that was approx 3-4" and they were both healed and growing fine. Well about 5 days ago when my lights came on (400w MH) i noticed these bright yellow spots almost like a yellow fiji collor all over the smaller one. I didnt think anything of it as i had much more delicate items in the tank that were fine so i just thought it was a molting type of thing. So the next day my large one is covered in the same spots now i become a little worried. When you rubbed the spots they sort of dissolved away but leaving a mark on the coral again i thought it was nothing to be that worried about as i had checked all my water levels and everything was fine and no other corals were being effected. By the thrid day i could see that the coral swere dieing. The edges were decaying and the middle body had turned into a white-grainy tissue(like the bases of most leathers) that just dissolved into the water when rubbed. At this point i took them both out and put into a smaller prop tank i have. Now here is where it gets VERY strange I called a family member who also has a 120 reef to tell him what happened. He also have 2 cutting from this main piece that i gave him well over a year ago his were in the process of doing the EXACT same thing. So i am completely baffled who the same thing woudl happen in two different tanks at that same time. The only link is we had just added some clean-up critters (r-leg hermits, scarlet reef, margarita snails) the same ones we have been using since set-up. all the animals are dead now i didnt take pictures until it was too late but i am sure you all knwo what they are supposed to look like. Also i did a coral dip on my two on day three and it had no effect. Any comments woudl be very helpful as it was a very nice piece i just lost. Thanks
