my tanks not set up yet. I was on craigslist looking for a bigger tank for my turtles and found someone that had 2- 55's and a few other tanks he was selling and I just took both 55's cause it was cheap so the turts are in one and the others just sitting there. I just have to call up AGA and get that top frame cause the center brace is broken and he said it would bow(sp?). theres a guy in the other forums that has a post with the same tank (55 reef on a budget) and he had same problem.

anyone know how long it takes to get access to the private forum? I tried registering the same day I joined (paypal) so I know it might take a few days to notice.

Luis contact (pm)eric (Emelton) he can get you on the Lira forum if that's what your asking..
BTW I have a bunch of 55 g that you could have had free if you were a LIRA member... :)

Now ya tell me :P
thats ok, it all started out with turtles and the extra tank made us think of what we could do with it and thats how I ended up here. so if it wasnt for the turtles needing a tank I would have never started lookin into fish, and then into reef. I see you have a 55, so Im gonna start buggin you for info now lol, but thats later, since its the same size I always wonder about what size pumps and skimmers, powerheads etc.... but im still aways away from that

Yes I currently have a 55 but I'm upgrading to a 120 because of the width (24" comparied to 11") If you plan on going with a 55 SW see me first I can give/sell you what I have been using. but IMO if your starting I would go no less then a 90 the depth of the tank is what you want unless if a fish only tank.
chuck
I do Have a 130 gal tall 36h 24w 24L tank I can sell ya (dirt cheap) for an fish only tank if you are interested.

130, geeeezus
only thing being Im kinda restricted on space, my livingroom/diningroom is about 18x12 and with the livingroom set and diningroom table, not much space left. we're trying to see where we could even fit the 55gal. but I know what you mean with the 55, its sooo narrow

Start small, get as much free as you can and try it for 3 months, if at the end you're not completely satisfied you'll get a full refund of the free equipment.

Only get a new larger tank after you've decided to stay. Usually after a year or so. Just don't do a sand bed in the tank, do it remotely in a refugium.

I also have a 55 that is just sitting in my basement. I got it for free from another LIRA member. It's free to anyone (not just LIRA members) that want it. The only stipulation is you have to pick it up.
It's also drilled so you would want to do a sump.

The short answer, yes.
The long answer, no.
;)

No problem Chuck, I understand your feelings for LIRA. I don't have the same allegiance, but I will and have donated to LIRA members and LIRA itself.

Also, effhew:hmm6:

Ray, I know you love me.

You can do a sand bed if you like, but be warned, if you ever upgrade that tank, you will be dealing with a lot of garbage in your sand bed. They are meant to be in for long periods of time and seem to break down after 4-6 years. My good friend is dealing with a 7 year old sand bed now. His tank is a garbage disposal. If you do a sand bed, do it remotely. (in a refugium) This way, if it ever has to be removed, you can do so without disturbing the reef.

OMG bill has something negative to say about a dsb???? whant next you gona get a skimmer?

Yes, he means the sand in the primary tank. I'm going through the same problem with my upgrade. The sand in my 55 g is ripe. meaning it traped all the things a dsb is suppose to trap. now when I move to my 120 g the sand in my 55g is no good to put into the 120 it because it contains a lot of gases that are now liberaterated with the disturbance. I can only use the fist inch of sand to transfer to my new tank. without cleaning it, If you keep a dsb in your refugium you can remove it without damaging or disturbing the main body of sand..
read up on deep sand beds to understand it. do not take my words as being totally correct..

K: welcome back... Hey are you working at the same place ?(43rd st) I Haven't seen ya in a while??

chuck

oh... I wasnt planning on having a deep bed, i was gonna have like 2" in there. mostly just for look, not live sand. was wondering what the sand in the fuge had to do with the sand in the tank when the fuge will be hidden. and if I ever upgrade, which now I know im saying I wont, and I know most of you say I will cause it usually does, I didnt think of using the same sand

Yep, sand in the tank.
If you want a deep sand bed, do it in a refugium. I know some people just love the look of a sand bed in the tank, but just be warned, they can be a hassle too. Yet, they work so well, so I still recommend you having one, just not in the main display.
