Divers den mantis

Pea-brain

In Memoriam
Hi! I really hate to annoy, but I believe that the mantis in your Divers den is a Psuedosquilla ciliata. The mantis is yellow, which I have read is a rare morph and usually only occurs in P. Ciliata for the most part. Others have pointed out its similar body shape also. Now this has been kinda bugging me since you had this in stock so could you maybe do me a little favor and have someone at the holding facility just check and see if it has a checkered pattern on its eyes? Because if it does it is almost certainly a P. Ciliata. Of course I could be wrong. I am FAR from an expert even if I pretend i know what i'm talking about :p Thank you and I hope This is the right place to ask such a question.

Pea-brain,

Thank you for your post. We have brought this information to the attention of our Director. We shall be reviewing the classification of this specimen and making any changes necessary to ensure accuracy.

Pea-brain,

After closer inspection of this mantis shrimp, it is evident it has been misidentified. Although no checkered pattern is visible in the eyes, it does have the large oval or peanut shaped eyes and is a spearer (not a smasher) which rules out the identified genus of Gonodactylaceus. We have changed the genus to Pseudosquilla which better represents this shrimp.

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention,

If it helps any this is a link to a site which contains care information, pictures, distinguishing characteristics, etc. it has a closeup of the eye for better illustration of the checkerboard pattern. It needs a U shaped burrough with the width of 1.5 the width of the animal (I think) If you were to stick a PVC pipe in the sand at a 90 degree angle it would be comfortable until you find someone to buy it. A mixed diet of frozen squid and shrimp (thaw it before of course) once every other day should keep it fed at a low cost. here is the link to Dr. roy's list: P. Ciliata and a link to Roy's list Which you can use to identify the mantis shrimps most commonly caught and sold. It may help you identify your other mantis shrimp also.

wow. Dr. Foster just complimented me:D I truly wish that I hadn't got my "expertise" because I have too much time on my hands  Thanks! It just so happens i have an extra tank open....hmm... and the price is already down to 40$. If that mantis is still there in 2 weeks I may just buy the little bugger
