DIY aquafuge bubbles. Please help

I made a DIY refugium similar to the CPR HOB aquage but mine is around 5 gallons and sits on the stand behind my 10 gallon. I intake is 1/2" tubing and the output is 1" tubing back into the tank pretty much like the CPR. My problem is that i am getting a lot of bubbles coming back into the tank. I tried to put a T fitting with the top open to the airi nstead of just an elbow on the output but it didn't help much. Is there any way to eliminate the bubbles?

There are 2 main things I can think of to help you with your bubble problem, slow down the flow rate, since the water flowing out of the fuge is creating the bubbles, or if you have 2 much of a drop into the tank, lower the fuge so the water does not rush out into the tank. A larger return pipe might also help.

I don't think a larger return will matter due to only 1/2 inch is the input. I do agree about too much of a drop and slowing the intake.

Slow the intake to nothing and start to open it up a bit, find the point where you start to see bubbles.

The water level does not cover the drain so air enters the return tube with the water so i think this is the problem. Is there any way to prevent this? I noticed on the CPR that the intake is at a higher level than the return, but mine is the opposite. Could this be the problem?

Having the intake higher than the return allows gravity to work for you. If the flow is to fast then air gets sucked into the return and into your tank. Either make sure the return is low enough so it is completely covered, which means if you loose power water will continue to flow out until it bottoms out on the return or slow the intake and start to increase it until no more bubbles. Slowing the intake also means less turnover in the refuge.
