DiY ATO

I need to make a ATO. but my ATO water is in my basement about 15-18 feet away from my tank. Anyone know how to do this? Or is it better to get the JBJ ATO. and DIY to make it work from my basement ?

is the sump in the basement?? if so just get a ato kit from www.aquahub.com or www.autotopoff.com & set it to fill in the sump

otherwise, you are gonna be hard pressed to find a pump that can overcome that kinda head height that wont pump too much too fast...& cost bookoo $$$ for just being an ato pump

if no sump in the basement, i'd suggest doing some kind of ato reservoir at the sump w/ one of the aforementioned ato kits & just perodically fill the reservoir up the old fashion way of bringing the water to it LOL

james3370, I need to have you come by my house so I can pick your brain or at least get a dump of your aquarium links... seems like I keep running into and using your advice!

you didn't answer my questions.....

is the sump in the basement or at the tank??

if the sump is in the basement, why not just do your ato there??

if it's at the tank, i think you'd be much better off doing your ato at the tank w/ a decent sized tank & just fill the reservoir when needed. depending on how much ato water you use, it could be as simple as 2 5 gallon buckets....1 for the reservoir & 1 to bring it up from the basement when needed to fill

....otherwise moving ato water the distance you are talking about (22ft) is gonna take a pretty big (read expensive) pump & most of those are still gonna be putting out more flow than you need for a simple ato. the only mag pump that would work at the head height is a mag36 & at 22ft it is still doing 100gph which is waaaay too much for an ato...& it's gonna set ya back about $250

Sorry the sump is under my tank and my RO/DI unit is in my basement

in that case, if it were me, i'd do as my last 2 paragraphs said & manually bring water up to an ato reservoir as needed

then you just need an ato kit from www.autotopoff.com & a cheap ato pump (which they sell as well). i like the aqua-lifter for $15....that's what i'm gonna get for my setup along w/ the dual-float sump ato kit for $50.

....actually, for an extra $30 i might add the 3rd float that is a run-dry protection for the ato reservoir that keeps the ato pump from running in the event that the ato reservoir runs out of water....so $105 for everything w/ shipping :D

+1 Peristaltic Pump

You'll most likely need an anti-siphon design possibly a 4 roller.

I would think that the Litermeter 3 would best.

wow i just went to bulkreefsupply & looked at the litemeter peristalic pump & after seeing the amount of draw & head height it can deal w/, isee why they are so damn expensive :eek2:

still think i'd rather carry some water every once in awhile up from the basement over spending that kinda cheese for one...but that's just me

I have the tunze osmolator to top off my tank. My top of drum is in the basement on a table and it tops off my actual tank (not a sump). I'd have to measure it, but I would think it would be about 12-14'. You can buy the tunze pump by itself for I think $30. You would need to have a top off system that runs on 12v (or 9v, I forget what the pump runs at) DC to operate the pump, or make one yourself. It should do the trick for you and be very inexpensive. Shoot me a PM if you need any help.

Your regular house water pressure will push the RODI water up to your tank no problem , no pump needed . Mine pushes up about 10 feet and over about 60 feet . If you can use water faucet on that floor the RODI will push water there as well .

Unless you have a pressurized holding tank, you'll wipe out your rodi filters/membrane pretty quick from tds creep due the the rodi unit cycling all day long.

Bulk Reef sells a really nice ATO that can be hooked directly to an rodi unit. I believe it's called Level-Loc but still would need a pressurized holding tank.

not to mention, a lot of people like to add their Ca/Alk additives to their top off water in which case it needs to come from a reservoir of some sort.

I'm in the same boat as Dan, only my water will be coming from the opposite end of my house to my tank. Over about 50 feet, and up about 3-4 feet. I have DI water in a 55 gallon trash can with wheels, thinking about putting a pump here and running hose through my crawlspace , come up through the wall or the floor to my sump under my stand. I have an extra Mag 12, but I think that would be overkill.

So do yall think Osmolator or Toms Aqualifter or another Harbor Frieght pump? If I leave the sump end of the hose out of the water, I shouldn't need a check valve right?
