DIY filter sock

Hi, everyone,

So I've recently found that on my 3 month old 15 gal nano, with 15 gal sump, that there's a lot of uneaten mysis in the sump. I suspect this is causing my phosphate spike. I know that this is due to my overfeeding, and as a new reefer, I've learned to stop that.

That said, I'd love to use filter socks on the end of the 3/4 pvc overflow that drains into my sump to catch any uneaten food. I was thinking of using the filter sock mesh that you'd use on an underground french drain-type landscape pipe. They have huge lengths of it at home depot. I was thinking of cutting a length, tying it off at the bottom, and securing it with a rubber band to the 3/4 pvc.

Any issues you can see with this? It keeps out fine silt underground, so the mesh size should be good. Here's the link for the Home Depot product I'm talking about. I like it because it doesn't stretch like pantyhose would.

Thoughts?

Another option for filter sock--for those w/ a 3d Printer

Great info. Thanks!

I also found this (below link) on thingiverse.

I have a 3d printer (my kids' actually), and this should fit. If this is basically free and I can customize to fit my sump, I can see buying some BRS socks with rings on them. Just another option for people who are looking

Not sure if you have a sowing machine in the house but you can make cheap custom size filter socks by using felt. Super cheap at walmart or any craft store...
