DIY fish food recipe?

I have seen a few post on this but would like to try something. Would anyone who has mixed their own food share their recipes? I have a mixed tank and would like to mix some and freeze it. :p

Once you start making your own food you won't go back. It last FOREVER - and frozen food ain't cheap. Your fish will eat like kings for just pennies a day

This is what I use, the recipe is always a little different depending on what in on hand. You may also want to add more of some ingredients over others depending on the individual needs of your fish.

The following statement I can't emphasize enough: Make sure your significant other/parents or anybody else that uses the blender and utensils is not around to see you make this food. They will not be pleased.

I have used:
shrimp
squid or octopus - beware: gets stuck in blender
cigar minnows
oysters - a pain to shuck but readily available here
nori
cyclopeeze
Selcon
garlic
formula 1 or 2

Blend them all together to desired consistency - kinda runny. I usually have to add a little water. You'll end up with a nice brown puree.

I tend to use more shrimp than squid or fish now. If you have a lot of tangs you can go a little heavy on the nori. The garlic you want to pre-chop before adding to the blender.

After the whole concoction is blended, I like to put it through a fine metal strainer to get a lot of the liquid out. That's a personal preference, I don't think that most people do this since you'll lose a little of it. It just makes the food less messy when its thawed and I'm feeding to the fish.

Where in Tampa do you buy these
shrimp
squid or octopus - beware: gets stuck in blender

do you go to the grocery, asian market, or bait store?

I can't agree with this enough. I made this mistake... and you should have seen the looks that I got for it. Now my SO is a guy so I thought I'd be fine... but no.

He does love to watch the fish chow down on it though! :D

I Used:
fresh sea scallops
fresh shrimp
fresh clams
cyclopleeze
frozen mysis
formula 1
nori
selcon
garlic extract

my fish go nuts when I feed

Do you freeze all this? Do you use equal amounts? Do you mix anything to hold it together?

how do you go about freezing single servings of this mixture?

Here's how I have done it in the past:

Cut some lighting egg crate to fit inside a cookie sheet or glass pan. Use something that will fit in your freezer.

Place some waxed paper underneath the lighting egg crate and pour the mixture over it. Use a rubber spatula to smooth it out.

Place the whole thing in the freezer and leave it for a few hours. When it's completely frozen, you can pop the little cubes out and store them in a bag.

I've also heard of people using mini ice cube trays as well, but the resulting cubes were still too big for my 29g. The egg crate cubes are the perfect size, just about the same as the foods you can purchase at the LFS.

Combine in a blender or food processor:
fish fillet / shrimp / clams / squid / (whatever is handy at the grocery)
selcon
garlic
frozen cyclopeeze
nori

I don't add any dried flake/pellet to the mix because they're reported to be high in phosphate.

Scoop it into gallon size freezer bags and lay flat to freeze in a thin layer. At feeding time, break off a small piece, and hold it in front of a pump output to thaw. Pieces of varying sizes blow off into the water, and all of the fish go nuts. My achilles even picks at the frozen chunk while it's in my hand.

I have heard that lots of people buy "frozen seafood medley", but I have never been able to find this stuff. Is there any problem with using the fresh, unfrozen stuff at the seafood department of my market? Also, what is selcon? When people say they add nori, is this just the dried seaweed sheets?

yes make sure nobody see's you using the blender. i had to buy my fiance a new one because she wont use that one ever again. so now i have my own to use for fish food.

another little tip is i used eggcrate on a large cookie sheet ( make sure the cookie sheet will fit in your freezer!) then spread the mushe over the eggcrate and push it in the squares. after it is frozen pop the cubes out and put them in a tupperware. no you have your own little cubes!

i just have a question the food you buy at the store does it have phosphates in it. cause i heard some do.

Fresh seafoods shouldn't have phosphate added to them, that's your best bet. Anything that's processed/frozen is anyone's guess. Buy fresh when you can.
