DIY Food Recipe

You forgot the 20 lb of scallops. I used ~33 lb seafood and ~45 lb overall.

180 mL of Selcon and 15 oz cyclops (frozen) so scaling back to 2 lb would be like 2/45 or roughly 0.05 (5%), or 0.75oz cyclops (1/3 of a bar) and 9 mL Selcon, or a little under 1/4 of a 60 mL bottle.

Oops! Thought that was 20 scallops not pounds!! ...little difference :hmm5:

Thanks for the heads up and help... I really appreciate it!

Smaller Quantity....

Smaller Quantity....

I would like to mix all of my foods together once a month and then break off 1piece of food when feeding vs. 3+ as I am doing now.

I was overwhelmed trying to figure out the amounts I would purchase to feed my tank. Do you have a "recipe" or suggestion on amounts of ingredients for a smaller quantity of food?

We have a 500gal tank with the following inventory (off the top of my head);

Lg Bubble (14")
1 Frogspawn
1 Leather
Candy Canes
Lobophylia
Zoos
Xenia
1 Dunkin
And a few more things I can't remember the names of.

Blue Throat
Naso Tang
Hippo Tang
Soho Tang
Mustard Tang
Vlamingi Tang
Unicorn Tang
Butterfly
Foxface
Dragonette
Sandsifter Blenny
3 Clowns
1 Bengai Cardinal
5 Damsels

The fish eat like pigs and ALWAYS seem hungry. And, wow, for a reef tank that we wanted to focus on corals, we sure have a lot of fish :).

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Well you can purchase certain items in smaller quantities, like the frozen cubes from Brine Shrimp Direct, and the table shrimp and other stuff, but certain ingredients only come in larger sizes. So get those and keep them for later batches. Of cut them out, substitute something else, etc.

Or, organize a club event. We just did another one and made 72 14oz bags. That was over one entire 5 gallon bucket.

Thank you for the feedback!
Im under the impression that oyster feast is more than just ground oyster and is just oyster eggs and ovarian tissue. Am I wrong?

I'm trying to work out the math with your recipe but it's hard since you made so much more. Will you check my math? I used the total amount of seafood you used (13 pounds of cod, shrimp, squid, octopus) compared to the 2 pounds I'm going to use. This is what I came up with:

Per 2 pounds of seafood
About 2 oz of cyclops (how would this relate to freeze dried cyclops)
About 30 mL secon

Thanks!!

You are correct. Oyster-Feast is not simply ground up whole oysters with sodium alginate added. The oysters themselves are also harvested at peak spawning time to allow for more eggs and sperm.

I recently heard that adding fresh mussels can add phosphates, any input on this? I'd never heard it before so I added them to my blend when I made my food
