Asking in a DIY section if DIY is worth doing is quite likely to get a biased responses
I think it's worth doing. For sumps traditionally cool white, but lots of people use red now. Personally I'd use cree XPG2 for whites and probably Cree XPE for 660nm reds, but the market is actually slightly different this side of the pond than over there (once you include often $30 PnP!).
I built a small 4 LED unit for a small fuge light. Used 2 red and 2 blue (660nm and 450nm I believe). I already had a board with 2 Meanwell LDD drivers on it so just needed to get a case and the LEDs. In the end, I'm not sure it was really worth it versus picking up something like this...
Gave over 300 PAR at 18" (and that's actually a low number since the Apogee PAR meter reads almost nothing above 650nm, the red LEDs peak at 659nm). Was used over a 24x12x14 section of a sump. You want to give as much light as you possibly can to macroalgae for the best growth, and by god I'd say I succeeded in that lol
