DIY magnet mount questions

Has anyone here made any magnet mounts? I've finished my MJ mods, and got one mounted in my 55, mounting the one in the 35 hex is gonna be a little more tricky because I need to put the magnet on the back of the MJ. The only magnets I found at Lowes (didn't get a chance to go to Home Depot today) were ceramic magnets something like 3/4" x 1 1/2" x 1/4" thick. Seemed to be strong enough, but not coated. Would ceramic magnets be reef safe without being coated? Also thought about coating them myself, but what can I coat them with that will be reef safe. I know I've seen pics somewhere on RC of some that looked like big refrigerator magnets encased in colored acrylic, that I think came from HD, but even though I was able to get the search to work, I couldn't find them tonight.

CAn you put up where you got the mod info from. I liked how that MJ looked when finished. Good luck on magnets. Could you use the "liquid vinyl" you dip metal tools in for better grip to coat the magnets? I have no idea what the ingredients list is or how it would react being submerged.

Read through this thread. It has some info on mag mounts.

I've been doun this road with not much luck!I was going to put rare earth magnets (very strong)in a mold and fill ith casting resin but the only place I found rare earth magnets was on e-bay for like $12 and found the casting resin at hobby lobby for round $12 too.Ok!thats 24 bucks in this thing already! If anybody knows of a much cheaper source for this stuff let me know.A mag float is bout $15 so I just sanded and superglued my seio mount to the mag float. It's working great so far!I might get a nylon screw and put in it if the glue stops holding.
If you come up with a good cheap way,let me know!!

There is a company out with "generic" magnet mounts for most MJ, JBJ and other powerheads but they are around $25.00 so whats the point.

Cichlid: Yeah, I was thinking about the liquid vinyl stuff, Poly Dip I think is the name of it, but I don't know if it is reef safe. Does anyone know??

Buzz: Thanks for the link. I use the cheap magfloat knockoffs from WalMart ($5) for standard MJ mounts, but with the mod its too heavy. mjmods.com sells magnets encased in acrylic for $16 +shipping, thought I might could find something cheaper than that. If all else fails, I could just buy a magfloat and silicone it to the MJ.
