DIY MaxiJet Stream (Pic Intense)

Thanks Justin. I've got it down now to where I build one of these in 2 hours tops from scratch once I have all the parts. It' a fun little project I must say.

Here is my version of this mod using a powerhead 301. It took me about 10min to do and most of that was waiting for the epoxy to dry.
Here is what I used minus the drill.

The Impller after I cut the fins off of it and glued on a R/C boat prop. Note the second mod from another PH next to it and also this is before I trimmed down the fins on the boat prop.

This is after I put the magnet back into the PH. You may also see that the housing around the boat prop was the original directional housing with the ends cut/popped off and water vents drilled in the side. Very Very simple. The directional end cap that is unattached is there just to show what the end cap use to look like.

My only hang up is that I need to put a stopper on the end to reverse the prop rotation. It runs very quiet and kicks like a mule for a little PH.
 
Hey turf, wouldnt you want a cross arm to keep your impellor centered?As well as to stop from blending any fish up?

I still need the to cover it from the fish but other then that due to the design of this powerhead(the rod inparticular), the amount of power it doesn't have compaired to a MJ 400 and the the fact that the rod is only about 1.5" long it doens't need extra support to stay centered.
 
If you build a cross brace, it's a lot easier to put in a stopper too ;)
Otherwise when the propeller hits the stopper, it may knock your magnet (and rod) off center and the whole thing may just stop.

Great news... I don't need to put a stopper on my mod because it never turns the wrong way... I've restarted it probably 45 times and it always spins the right way, right away.
 
Hi -

Does the propellor assembly need to be independent of the manget assembly - or can it all be glued into one solid assembly?
 
Most glue it solid... I glued mine to the old impeller because you may notice that it slips... that acts like a battering ram so the magnet can get up enough speed to start the rotation. Not always needed but prevents fewer false starts.
 
Just to confirm - I could glue the propellor directly to the magnet? My current attempt is similar to this - I can't get the pump(mj600) to spin in the correct direction.
 
Maybe it is not that the mj is spinning the 'wrong' direction but rather that your prop is designed to spin the wrong direction (clockwise aka left handed vs. counter clockwise aka right handed) and yes everyone has in one way or another been glueing theirs directly to the magnet.
 
Actually the MJ CAN and DO spin both ways. One way will make the propeller blades pushes the water outward while the other will make them suck in water.

The trick to make the MJ to always spin the right way on start up is make a stopper.

1. Make sure the rod is 1 inch or so longer than the propeller assembly
2. Make a stopper like the below (note the little protruding black rod used to stop the prop blade) so that when the prop spins the wrong way, it pushes the whole assembly out and to be stopped and right itself. When the prop is spinning the right way, the whole assembly is pushed back into the magnet body and all is well :)

As you can see, the flow is quite turbulant with only the one. I may end up putting them both in the tank and connecting them to a wave timer.
I had three MJ 1200's running off a Red Sea Wave maker in my 92 gal corner. Each were at a diff height and the outputs were crossed and the flow was awesome, especially when I put it on the cycling mode where it alternates between the three intensity modes every three hours as well as having the night time mode. So I would definitely recommend if you put more than one to use a wavemaker. perhaps put them facing each other at opposite ends of the tank and then use a wavemaker.

3/32" Ti Rod is difficult to find. It's normally only available in 1/8" increments. If you can find 14AWG, you'll be incredibly close... Ti Welding rod comes to mind.

No welding rods needed. It's much simpler than that. I built a custom BMX bike and I know that 14 gauge Ti rods are used to make light bicycle spokes.

A little pricey, but you get 25 long rods. You may also be able to pick up single Ti spokes at a bike shop.
