first i would like to say this is the best mod ever for its value and best improvement in tank's health

questions,
i see many parts list, which is the final parts lists for a mj 1200?

i have a 75 gal tank with 4 mj 1200 on a wavetimer, if i mod 2 of the mj 1200 i should be safe with amount of flow if one modded mj 1200 turns on while the other is off and then alternates, correct right?

ItsMee- you dont have to use airline tubing. i couldnt find any that size. i actually used part of a plastic pen. any plastic tubing will work if you can find it in that small of a size.

Is there really such a thing as a final list for parts in DIY? :lol:
I think every time I tinker and change the mod a bit the parts list changes a little.

The basics that you'll need are:

a Maxijet powerhead
a rod (0.098" OD carbon fiber or 3/32 316 stainless steel)
a propeller (1.25" to 1.5" in diameter)
a 1.5" PVC test cap
a 1.75" ID PVC pipe or adapter cut to length of your choice

You are using 1 3/4" pipe? Is the 1 1/4" pipe for the 600 only? I just picked up all my parts, and noticed that a 1 1/2" cap probably wouldn't fit a 1 3/4" pipe very well. How do you get around that??

Actually you're right. I just measured my pipe and the ID is indeed 1.5" not 1.75" :lol: Time for bed I think.

I just finished modding a 1200, and I am waiting for all the epoxy and stuff to dry before I introduce it into my tank. On the test run, I wasn't able to notice a huge increase in the flow, but it was also a breif test. I will post some updates once I get a better idea as to if my mod works.

how are you guys securing propeller to the shaft. The opening on the prop is 1/8" or are you just epoxying it to the shaft?

The Home Depot and Lowes in our area(s) didnt have them either, and were clueless as to what I was referring to. I finally was able to find it at a plumbing specialty store for less than a buck. Unfortunately I didnt have time/supplies to work on the mod so I left them there. I think during Thanksgiving Break, I'm going to pick up 2x 600s and use them for my frag tank instead of the closed loop I was planning. The benefit of that is if I decide to use the closed loop - the powerheads will be good in the display tank too

The way that I epoxied my prop to the shaft is as follows. You should have 2 diameter shafts, a 1/4" and a 5/16". The 1/4" shaft I epoxied into the top of the impeller head. I then took the 5/16" shaft and cut it to length of the 1/4" shaft, adding about 3/16". Sliding them together, I had about 3/16" extra on the outer shaft. I then grooved 2 slots that matched the prop pitchand epoxied the prop into the outer shaft. Put some glue on the inner shaft and slide down the outer shaft and you should have it. In the end, the prop is epoxied into the outer shaft and onto the inner shaft.

Mine is even simpler than that. Take the prop and drill/enlarge a bigger 1/4" hole in it. Then fit the 1/4" rigid airline tubing and voila !

So... I've been thinking about how this mod can be made even better and cleaner. Slotted PVC pipes come to mind. I think this would work.

Might work better than drilling holes into the pipes and at least they're much cleaner. All I gotta do now is figure out how to get a hold of one. What do you all think?

There is one other product that the LFS is using that is black, and tons of holes. It is round, and they slide it over PVC upright drains to keep livestock in the display tanks. He has a 4' piece of it in the shop, but I don't know where it can be purchased. I'll have to ask. It basically looks like screen, although the holes are larger and the material is made of plastic. But it being black and having all those holes would cause zero restrictions. I bet it would be awesome, and blend in much better. I'll get a picture of it today, and find out where it came from.

That's strange. My MJ400 puts out a lot of flow. Maybe you don't have enough water coming in to produce the kind of flow you expected (e.g. Not enough openings of holes or that they are not large enough). Got a photo of your mod?
