DIY MaxiJet Stream (Pic Intense)

All I can say is that my Aqua Clear 401 PH definately doesn't like my left hand drive prop... I completed the mod for it today, and when it works, it is extremely impressive.... Sad part is, a few seconds after it is running, it kicks out the prop and rattles trying to reverse spin. Increasing the size of the holes only allows it to run a few seconds longer than before. I practically have nothing blocking the input flow now, and it still wants to kick backwards..

Since I have plenty of extra parts left, I will try a few different things, but I may have to hunt out a different prop for this one.

what is the length of the pvc you are using dhngugen? also how far into the pvc is the prop mounted? wouldnt you want the slots behind the prop?

The length is about 2 inches cut from 2 foot section.

Believe it or not I find that having slots all along the length of the PVC pipe will create the maximum amount of flow rather than just having slots behind the prop. Using a more powerful pump like MJ900 or MJ1200 you might be able to get away with only the slots from behind the prop.

Well, my MJ 1200 only lasted a little more than a week... I somehow blew off one of the blades on the prop. Looks like I get to go back to the drawing board...

Let me get this straight..without the stopper installed, the prop has a 50/50 chance of spinning the wrong way and not working? So If I were to unplug it, then plug it back in I have another 50/50 chance of it not working? I ask because if this is correct, I plan to make mine without going through the trouble of making a stopper because I dont mind flipping coins (unplugging and plugging the power cord) until it works.

You got it... 50/50 chance of the prop spinning the right or wrong way without the stopper.

That's fine that you want to manually kick start the prop yourself BUT...Here's the thing though... What if you're not home and you had a momentary power loss? What if the prop spins the wrong way when the power comes back on making the pump sucking in instead of blowing out? You might come home to seafood puree if you know what I mean.

Just a little update. I experimented a little bit by using 2 props on one impeller by placing them in a way that they formed almost like a screw. The results was A LOT more flow than just the one prop.

I have all the things that absolutely NEED to go back on (return pump, heater, some flow, skimmer) after the power goes back on hooked up to a GFCI that has auto restart, and everything else is not hooked up to auto-restart...so ill just hook it up to the outlet thats not auto restart. :)

I have never owned a seio or anything like it. How does it work exactly? Does the prop suck water in and shoot it out of the holes in the side, or does th prop suck the water in from the holes and push it out the front?

When it spins the right way, the prop will suck in water through the holes then forces it out the front. When it spins the wrong way, the reverse.

i have a bunch of old pumps with boken shafts or impellers good magnets and stuff though.. like a few old 802 poweheads >>>WOW>>> i hope. and a mj900 and 1200 and a few aqua clear 401 and 301' hopefully i can get them all to work.. i like the dual propeller idea as well. i orded 6 of those white ones form tower hobbies maybe make a few with two and a few with one.. can help the flow in the frag tank and sump area maybe the main tank but its got like 70 turn over now anway.. more would not hurt though...lol... thanks so much

I finally replaced my old AquaC Remora and now I have a spare skimmer/ mj1200 sitting around. I think I'm gonna sell the skimmer but keep the powerhead and try out this mod on it. I started reading this thread but then I was struck by a wave of lazyness. Could anyone summarize what's been discussed so far and what the most up-to-date way of doing the MaxiJet Stream mod is? I'll probably just end up reading the whole thread anyways, but I'm sure this will help plenty of other people as well.

dhnguyen how successfull are you with getting the prop to spin the right way each time. i have a stopper installed but sometimes it doesn't work every time.

Mine works all the time. Upon startup if the prop spins the wrong way it will hit the stopper and right itself.

When you say it doesn't work all the time what does that mean? Does it keep spinning the wrong way? Does the prop stop?
