So I have been thinking about building my own protein skimmer and I figured I would put the design out here for critiques and criticism. The basic design come from a the reef Octopus models, instead of using acrylic tubes, I will be using 4" pvc. There will be a 2" pvc pressure union between the body of the skimmer and collection cup for cleaning purposes. The skimmer body will be roughly 20" in length. I will have to cut and mold a piece of acrylic to view the inside of the body so I can monitor what's going on. The total build should run me about 90 dollars which is about 1/3 of an actual reef octopus.... let me know what you think.

for $90 you could easily buy a used skimmer of that capacity. check craigslist.

also how is the water level regulated in this design?

While your drawings looks great I have to agree with wrb500. You're going to spend more in materials and time then just buying a slightly used one. Search craigslist.

Wow that is rude! - Thanks for making no sense and shooting this poor dude down

No body even answered his questions!! wow how productive - what airheads!

Go for it man, build it out of pvc and it will be cheap as, who cares if you cant see through it! as long as you can look into the cup!

If you look back through this subforum there was a guy that was 3d printing needle wheels for jebao pumps maybe you could scale it down or just buy a cheep needle wheel pump of fish-street

Hope your project goes well, and people stop posting on this to get there post count up, really cant get over that kind of attitude in a DIY forum, seriously go post in the consumerist and waste forum or something

Just remember with that output the level the pvc output is at will be where the water is up too in the main reaction chamber

The OP's question was well answered in the OP's other thread. The OP asked how to shut this one down in the other thread....

Maybe i sould have quoted his question in here as well, but i thought it was fairly clear, with comments like "if you want this thread closing" and "all replies should go in the other thread" :rolleye1:
