I think you should go for it, there is nothing like having something of your own design that actually does what it suppose to do.
I been in this hobby going on 10 weeks and I have already designed and built my own working design.
Since I don't have a sump and I don't like the HOB I had to incorporate mine into my system. I designed it to also surface skim, GFO reactor, mechanical filter all in one.
I can control the flow of water/air very precisely. Works great if its within 1/2 of waterline which is also adjustable by sliding it up and down on the sucking cups.
It's 95% complete and still needs some tweaking but fully functional.
And been running 5 weeks with all my parameters at 0 with API test.
All my creatures seem to be happy
. Usually my GBTA is hugging it.
Just do the research. Pick a skimmer and go with similar pump (mine, Rio 800 Venturi) and build the skimmer around the pump. I got my plexiglass tubing/solvent on eBay and the sheet and tubing at Home Depot.
I have about 80 bucks in materials with left over plexi tube and sheet I can build something else.
I know sometimes I spend more than the actual product cost, but what's the fun in that? Lol
P/s btw, cool drawing
it's a start.
