I've been thinking about adding a DIY rockwall to my 40-gallon reef tank. The only problem is, it's currently stocked. I want to hide the HOB skimmer and overflow box so I though about placing it about 4" from the back of the tank as more of a partition than a background. Has anyone tried adding a rockwall to an established tank? And, has anyone tried a rockwall with a large gap like I'm thinking of trying?
My plan is to use light diffuser and attach lace rock to it. I've got black foam to fill in the gaps and then I'm going to epoxy the foam and add sand. I'll let it cure for 3-4 weeks before putting it in the tank.
Will adding a rockwall to my already established tank pose a problem for the current inhabitants? (All inverts - snails, shrimp, ricordia) and will having a 4" gap cause a problem? It should be easy to get into the space to vacuum up any detritus which may get trapped.
Thanks for any advice/feedback?
