DIY sump questions

I would like to create a sump using plastic storage bins. I have found a few sites that give some info, but I wanted to see if anyone could give me some advice from their experiances.

I haven't bought my tank yet, but soon will. Are sumps that use an external overflow chamber less effective?

Will a pre-drilled tank facilitate the use of a sump better than using a weir?

Started building one myself for my 55, got frustrated and bought a 75.

A few things to help that I came across during development:
1 - make sure the parts that you are making the bulkhead out of fit together if you are installing items outside of the bin - all threads are not the same, white PVC doesnt thread all the way, try the grey PVC located in the electrical sections for any threaded items.

2 - bin tends to bow when filled - always test before installing outside so you know what you are dealing with before a small drip ruins your day
