DIY Swirler Stein

Thanks,...after thinking about it some more thats how I thought it worked. I'm looking into some stepper motors that they use for 3-D printers, robotics ects. I need to find a control that will reverse them. I think I might have found one on fleabay for 9.99.
If anything comes of my parts search I'll put it up.---Rick

My two original ones I've built are still running strong. I did mod the pump mount to work with my newer Jebao RW pumps. Still can't believe the growth I get with moving powerbeads compared to stationary... I'll never go back.
 
hollback - Can you also post some pics? I want to see as many examples as possible. Its weird that old motor that use to be $10.00 is now $28.00 or so. I am going to try to nail down some motors in the in the next few weeks and get some parts for a dry run.

007Bond - Can you take pictures as you go along and keep a parts list as well? This looks like it could be very fun to tackle . At only 12v will you be using a wall wort? What type of pump do you plan on attaching to it?

No, its pretty simple,...on a DC motor, it reverses when you change its polarity,...that is what the timer does it switches polarity back and forth. The amount of travel is determined by the timing that you set. Ok here you go,...still working on it but a few pics to wet your diy whistle then as with most dyi projects you improve by putting your own spin on them.

I'm using wp40's and 60's, the pvc shaft is 1.25" http://i.imgur.com/CWvx1BY.jpg
I used a 90 at the bottom with the acrylic plate epoxied to it. then one side of the WP's suction cup s screwed to the plate. http://i.imgur.com/IPjbepv.jpg---http://i.imgur.com/SGLlNGk.jpg--- http://i.imgur.com/mnwNZ4R.jpg

next the top which is a male connector and a cap screwed to that.*note...I did not glue any of the pvc, all just friction fit so it can be taken apart.

You need to make a keyway for the motor shaft,....I did this by drilling a hole the size of the shaft and then some small holes on each side of that so I could slipped the piece of plastic in to blank off half of the hole...thus the key way* I'm sure there are more creative ways for this job.

I drilled a hole 1/8 larger than the 1.25 pvc in the top of my tank to put the pipe through next the male connector then screwed the cap on with the motor,...done:) but wait,...lets add more pumps, soooo I cut a T in a little further up the pvc shaft and added a 60. but with the thrust of two pumps I needed to make a standoff to keep the pvc shaft from binding in the aquarium top through hole.
The standoff is just a piece of acrylic with a magnet epoxied to it.

Looks good and thanks for sharing! Looks like you have thought out the solution quite well. Are you having any issues with the rod bending due to the force of the WP40? Cant you take a pick of the to top of it? I am having a little trouble visualizing how the motor turns the shaft. Where is that other part you showed earlier to control the reversing? Is that is a project box?

007Bond - Is that BRS Pukani rock in your tank? Not sure how long you had it but if you did if you did not cycle it before putting in your tank keep an eye on your phosphates. Mind turned into a ticking time bomb and crashed my tank :(.

With the length of my pvc shaft the force of just the 40 caused the shaft to be forced backwards before I added the 60,...you need to keep the shaft straight to preventing binding which hinders rotation. The standoff fixed it. The shaft in my tank is unusually long, but I think with the power of the WP pumps even on shorter shafts something would be needed to keep it straight.

Yeah I use a project box with a plug in the side from the motor.
I have things tore apart from a move right now. I will take a couple pics when I get it back together

My rock is not from BRS
