DIY Wavemakers or Timers?

So I am interested in having my pumps set on intervals for wave making.

I have two hydor pumps. a 600 gph and a 300 gph facing eachother.

I am starting to get annoyed at the constant straight flow (i think my SPS isnt liking it anymore either)..

I contemplated the hydor 360 degree gear driven wave maker plastic tip but i feel i would lose some flow where i want it most, straight out

I know I could easily go and grab the hydor smart wave, but being as I am a tinkerer I was contemplating a DIY.

i found a few builds but wasn't 100% sure on them

example:

it seems i still need a basic analog timer (why wouldn't he just use two?) unless I am missing something with the relays in the electric outlet box.

i also found this:

but I cant find out if I can setup interval timing or just one time on one time off per 24 hour period.

Anyone have any ideas on a DIY wave-maker?

hydors should not be cycled on/off.
The sound of them starting is absolutely annoying and can cause them to be damaged.

If you want a wavemaker.. buy a wavemaker. The motors are different and intended for cycling/ramping. Standard hydors are not.

Are you just bias based on the noise?

Yes mostly based on the noise.. anyone that can accept that either lives in a construction zone or is mentally unstable.

Not to mention the problems with the rubber bumper shearing off from the extra abuse.

And wavemakers are cheap now.. You can pick up a Jebao RW for less than the smart wave and have a "wavemaker" with more than just on/off

Its more than a "slight tick"... Its annoying metallic rattle of sorts.. Just go plug in/out your hydor many times and you will hear it.

And google "jebao RW"
